Barack Obama, unlike George Bush who wanted to be in bed before 10pm, likes to work late. But even by his standards Wednesday was out of the ordinary, sitting up in a largely empty White House until 2.30am as he edited a speech an adviser later described as one of the most important of his life.
He was still nervous about it when he rose to deliver it eight hours later. Normally Mr Cool, he fluffed his opening, referring to the defence secretary, Robert Gates, as Bill, the Microsoft founder.
Part of the explanation for the bout of jitters is that Obama is struggling to contain an ever-growing row over the future of Guantánamo Bay and the security apparatus created by the Bush administration as part of its "war on terror". But there is another factor: the return of an opponent the Democrats had thought of as politically dead: Dick Cheney. The sinister, reclusive figure at the heart of the Bush administration, who attracted labels such as Darth Vader and Dr Strangelove, has returned to the heart of Washington and is causing havoc.
Obama and Cheney were billed to speak at roughly the same time, though at different Washington venues. The US media described it as the political equivalent of Ali v Frazier

Hey Guardian, get over President Bush. He would be at his job super early while Obama sleeps in.
And the most fearsome of all...Gravitas
As well it should!
VP Cheney Rules!!!!
obozo is the phantom menace.
Gosh, Why didn’t we read about Zero freaking out over having to face the truth from a GREAT AMERICAN PATRIOT and HERO, Dick Cheney? Lets also remember that this same Zero picked PLUGS BIDEN as his Vice President showing great abilities in his selection processes just like sitting in the Pew of a Hate Monger for twenty some years and claiming to never hear the vile bile spewed forth all of those years.
oh brother... Obama does not EVEN rate...
Yoda moves too fast for the fascists.
However, since the metaphor is used, and we all know the dem-fascists use projection, let’s be clear.
Darth Vader was elected in 2008.
Thats funny! I love it!
I haven’t cracked up like that for months, that is funny as heck.
[cue the Imperial March]
Besides, 2AM nights are more conducive to COKE Binges, they just ain’t no fun at 8 PM or earlier, and the speeches make more sense seen thru Bong Eyes:-)
Obama edited his speech?
Sure anyone in public life would write and edit a speech, but he’s got the tele prompter.
I’ve noticed that in his speeches, he looks to his left, then looks to his right, all the time. He never looks right at the camera. It’s as if he shifts at precise angles to face the teleprompters on either side of him. Knowing about his teleprompter dependence, he looks so staged and stilted.
I have great respect for Sarah Palin and her speeches by contrast. At the Rep. Convention, the teleprompter broke down, so Sarah had to “wing it”. And she did a fine job. I wonder how Barack will do if his teleprompter ever malfunctions.
I heard he even takes his teleprompter equipment overseas on trips. Amazing. Amazingly sad that he has to do that.
Go get ‘em, Darth. We delight in their tremblings.
I don’t think it’s politically correct to compare Obama to Darth Vader. Firstly, to the liberals, the Democrats are the good guys and the Republicans are evil. Secondly, Obama’s racial/ethnic background and being the dark power hits too close to home for liberal sensitivities.
Exactly - I don’t buy this whole “Obama works late” hogwash. He simply stays up late and then sleeps in like a teenager. The worst qualities of Clinton and Carter rolled into one.
We’re living in Bizarro World, in which going to bed early to begin your job early the next day is somehow wrong, while staying up late and sleeping in is a sign that you care.
I agree with you on Sarah Palin...funny how speaking from the heart is a more powerful that reading sentences on a screen. Palin/Cheney (Liz) 2012 ;-)
