'WE'RE OUT OF MONEY'
Sat May 23 2009 10:32:18 ET
In a sobering holiday interview with C-SPAN, President Obama boldly told Americans: "We are out of money."
C-SPAN host Steve Scully broke from a meek Washington press corps with probing questions for the new president.
SCULLY: You know the numbers, $1.7 trillion debt, a national deficit of $11 trillion. At what point do we run out of money?
OBAMA: Well, we are out of money now. We are operating in deep deficits, not caused by any decisions we've made on health care so far. This is a consequence of the crisis that we've seen and in fact our failure to make some good decisions on health care over the last several decades.
So we've got a short-term problem, which is we had to spend a lot of money to salvage our financial system, we had to deal with the auto companies, a huge recession which drains tax revenue at the same time it's putting more pressure on governments to provide unemployment insurance or make sure that food stamps are available for people who have been laid off.
So we have a short-term problem and we also have a long-term problem. The short-term problem is dwarfed by the long-term problem. And the long-term problem is Medicaid and Medicare. If we don't reduce long-term health care inflation substantially, we can't get control of the deficit.
So, one option is just to do nothing. We say, well, it's too expensive for us to make some short-term investments in health care. We can't afford it. We've got this big deficit. Let's just keep the health care system that we've got now.
Along that trajectory, we will see health care cost as an overall share of our federal spending grow and grow and grow and grow until essentially it consumes everything...
SCULLY: When you see GM though as Government Motors, you're reaction?
OBAMA: Well, you know look we are trying to help an auto industry that is going through a combination of bad decision making over many years and an unprecedented crisis or at least a crisis we haven't seen since the 1930's. And you know the economy is going to bounce back and we want to get out of the business of helping auto companies as quickly as we can. I have got more enough to do without that. In the same way that I want to get out of the business of helping banks, but we have to make some strategic decisions about strategic industries...
SCULLY: States like California in desperate financial situation, will you be forced to bail out the states?
OBAMA: No. I think that what you're seeing in states is that anytime you got a severe recession like this, as I said before, their demands on services are higher. So, they are sending more money out. At the same time, they're bringing less tax revenue in. And that's a painful adjustment, what we're going end up seeing is lot of states making very difficult choices there...
SCULLY: William Howard Taft served on the court after his presidency, would you have any interest in being on the Supreme Court?
OBAMA: You know, I am not sure that I could get through Senate confirmation...
Developing...
I truly believe this. They are looking out more for their own personal interests than anything having to do with their constituents or the country as a whole.
Greed, and expectation of relevance in the new “Soviet Republic of the Americas” is what is driving the GOP right now, with the exception of perhaps a few people — and those people are NOT in Washington at the moment...
The silence of those in Washington and especially Congress approving unconstitutional law after unconstitutional law speaks volumes.
As for being broke — well, perhaps Obama should’ve waited a few weeks before pushing through all the new programs (like the Give Act establishing his police force, instead of keeping the money where it belongs - with the military).
I could go on, but 90% of the people on this forum know exactly what I'm talking about.
The system of checks and balances is broken, and the ABC's Departments only add to throwing power behind the Executive Branch, to the detriment of the entire nation.
I don't believe for a minute that Obama wants to get out of the “auto business” — why did he even pick it up in the first place? Bankruptcy Court, restructuring, etc... is where they should be. The President having power to dictate who to hire and fire, and dictating to these companies how much they can spend on marketing, and forcing decisions on revocation of franchise agreements, etc... is an egregious abuse of power, and NO-ONE is calling him on it... Well, at least no-one with any power to do anything about it at this point.
I also don't believe for a moment that he wants to get out of the banking business as well. Covering FDIC insurance would've been WAY cheaper if these banks went under than propping up poor investments and such.
I actually had a liberal professor tell me yesterday that Obama was trying to “rescue Capitalism”, yeah, and I'm Miss America! It's amazing how deluded some people are — supposedly intelligent people, especially. Obama has long admitted that the basis of his political philosophy is Collectivism (see link below my post). Add in his meteoric rise to power and his messiah complex, and it becomes even more unbelievable that he will ever let go of the power he has obtained.
NOTE: Obama is cutting in half marketing budgets of previously privately owned companies, saying “America is broke”, and yet today I saw a commercial on television promoting another project of Obama’s. GET A CLUE OBAMA — The election is OVER, it's time to stop spending money — OUR TAX DOLLARS NOW — on ADVERTISING for your personal agenda. As if you don't get enough press already?
RE: The comment that Obama is a collectivist see this blog post I put up a while ago during the campaign:
Obama Exposed 1995 Interview Proves him a Collectivist
QUOTE:
Obama on Individualism, vs. Collective thought, action and deed
“In America, Obama says, we have this strong bias toward individual action. You know, we idolize the John Wayne hero who comes in to correct things with both guns blazing. But individual actions, individual dreams, are not sufficient. We must unite in collective action, build collective institutions and organizations.
- Barack Obama, Interview with the Chicago Reader, 1995
I hate to break it to the President, but our "short term problem" IS the long term problem! Many people smarter than he'll ever be have been screaming for decades that the government was causing a long term problem that would cripple this nation.
As reverand Wright would put it, our "chickenz are comin home to roost."
And we have a Prez that can't see it...
I’m with you.
Today, I traded a couple of 10 week old meat rabbits for eight dozen farm fresh eggs. Then turned right around and traded 2 dozen eggs for two loaves of bread.
Everyone thinks it’s funny...quirky 2j, doncha know.
I call it practice.
What we need to do is develop “FReeper’s Gulch” or something, or buy some Island in the Bahamas and start over on our own? I’d rather be dirt poor and free, than live in servitude to tyrants.
I don’t know what the answer is. Back in my senior year of HS (1990) our teacher told us to seriously consider moving out of the US because it was “going to he$$”. Well, he was right, but considering he was a total liberal I’m guessing he’s thinking he was WRONG, and that he’s a happy camper - for now...
Um, Why, President Obama? Why?
OJT.
-snip-
Along that trajectory, we will see health care cost as an overall share of our federal spending grow and grow and grow and grow until essentially it consumes everything...
So you are saying that there is a hole in the bucket, and the solution is to make a LARGER HOLE, President Obama?
The Sick Twisted Marxist will simply confiscate wealth in addition to increasing taxes sky high.
Obama ain’t out of dough. He’s got that stash from all those sycophantic ass-kissing liberals who bought his two autobiographies. He and they are utterly disgusting.

Everything is going according to plan. Perhaps you're the one that can't see it.
ha ha ha
what wealth?
stocks? bonds? house equity?
hey zerO- help yourself
Bad decision making by the automakers? How about bad decision making by the silly legislators who mandated stupid CAFE standards that few Americans care one half a whit about?
How about unions that have given gazillions to Dems through the years as the Dems passed laws to favor the unions in return?
Finally, I ask this all the damn time but I'm not giving up. WHERE THE HELL ARE THE REPUBLICANS?
Bang the tanning booths, invade the fingernail parlors, take command of the DC barber shops. Get a pubbie on the TV to point all this stuff out!
And who the hell do I see on TV the other day all getting on my nerves and needing two to three slaps back to the stone age? JOHN MCCAIN!!! He's being interviewed by Greta and ole McCain, who had his chance and my didn't he make us sooooo proud....is going on and on about waterboarding being torture.
I ask ...are there no other Republicans in DC besides McCain? Are they all too busy hobnobbing with their friends across the aisle?
Somebody go find a Republican, arrange a press conference, call all the Sunday talk shows, hell call up Greta. Get a Republican away from the tanning booths and have them risk movement of carefully positioned head hairs and rant against Nancy Pelosi the liar, or the ridiculous speedreaders congress now uses, or the CAFE standards and union favoritism that ruined the car industry that Toyota need not bother.
We have no damn opposition party and that's more of a problem than the Dems. The Dems are only doing what Dems do. Why the hell shouldn't they? If Nancy Pelosi says...NO MAS...we discuss no mas...and she gets away with it, why shouldn't she?
We know the media won't disturb her highness and WE KNOW THE REPUBLICANS WON'T RISK ACTUALLY DOING THEIR JOB!
Ribbit.
No duh, Obama. YOU SPENT IT ALL.
YUP.
As long as we got ink, we got money!
My husband just went back to work Monday after being laid-off for 9 weeks (Manual & CNC Precision Machinist). The only reason he’s back at the job (for now) is a standing contract order that didn’t get canceled... Who knows if after they finish the order they’ll still have work, or be laid-off again.
I think his goal is to get as many people on the public dole as possible, frankly. The lack of private charities and the like make it nearly impossible for anyone who hits hard times to seek help from anywhere BUT the government. (We were about 2 weeks away from applying for food stamps, honestly... And, to my surprise (which is shocking) we would’ve qualified for the lowest bracket of food stamps for the last two years based on his yearly income which is NOT that bad at all! Definitely not a low enough income to where one should NEED assistance with food — especially where we live!
If Barack really wants to save money how about he goes back to his campaign promise to CUT spending, and take things OUT of the budget instead of robbing our military, and rightful government expenditures to prop up failed companies, or giving money to his ACORN buddies, or paying for waterparks in Florida (C’mon you’ve got the Gulf and the Ocean do y’all REALLY need another water park), or all the various other pork projects?
This is a calculated move. He wants to bring us to a point where the masses are BEGGING to be slaves, or he incites riots and can impose martial law, and then suspend the Constitution altogether... Whether he’s more beholden to Islam, or the Communists remains to be seen, but one thing is for sure... He is doing almost EVERYTHING in his power (and things that SHOULDN’T be in his power) to destroy the very fabric of this nation.
And do you know HOW they attracted all those really really smart libs?
By mocking the leaders. Mercilessly.
That is how smart people are fooled. Mocking is how to win the "cool" people. Mocking makes people laugh. Mocking makes people afraid of being laughed at.
Mocking is the sheepdog that shepherds the flock. Mocking was Alinsky's biggest tactic.
We need to counteract the mocking. Mocking appears to trump truth for the majority of people (especially liberals).
Did they really ask him about serving on the Supreme Court? Sheesh!
I have never once called him "president" obama. I just can't do it. The state of the country right now is surreal. I keep hoping it's a bad dream.
