Obama and Cheney: Point, Counterpoint on National Security
wsj ^

Posted on 05/21/2009 1:13:04 PM PDT by keep your powder dry

transcript of 'dueling' speehces...

Obama: I believe with every fiber of my being that in the long run, we also cannot keep this country safe unless we enlist the power of out most fundamental values

Cheney: Critics of our policies are given to lecturing on the theme of being consistent with American values. But no moral value held dear by the American people obliges public servants ever to sacrifice innocent lives to spare a captured terrorist from unpleasant things

Obama: Unfortunately, faced with an uncertain threat, our government made a series of hasty decisions … based upon fear rather than foresight, and all too often trimmed facts and evidence to fit ideological predispositions.

Cheney: No decision of national security was ever made lightly, and certainly never made in haste.

Obama: During this season of fear, too many of us – Democrats and Republicans; politicians, journalists and citizens – fell silent. In other words, we went off course.

Cheney: For all that we’ve lost in this conflict, the United States has never lost its moral bearings. And when the moral reckoning turns to the men known as high-value terrorists, I can assure you they were neither innocent nor victims.

Obama: I believe with every fiber of my being that in the long run, we also cannot keep this country safe unless we enlist the power of out most fundamental values

He's right. Values like limited government, personal responsibility, a respect for the law, moral behavior, ensuring people have to suffer the responsibility for their actions, ensuring that people have the right to enjoy the fruits of their labor without onerous taxation, etc.

Moral of the story, don’t bring a teleprompter to a gun fight. The “I’s” were a little over the top.

Man beats boy.

obama dares to speak of.... fundamental values... ......while advocating murder of a child who survives abortion, and indeed, abortion itself, yet worries about the pain suffered by a murdering terrorist? what a fool.

Cheney cleaned his clock.

He absolutely did and the MSM are scrambling to pick up the pieces as we write. This was 'adult' vs. 'child' and there's a reason why we have such 'mottos' as 'Remember the Alamo' and 'Remember the Maine' and Cheney by speaking to that, rather than 'fear mongering' as Obama describes it, kept the honor and memory of those people who died and the people who valiantly helped save lives that day. That's just worthless 'sentimentalism' for many liberals but not for me, and not, I expect, for anyone that posts here regularly.

“He absolutely did and the MSM are scrambling to pick up the pieces as we write”

Things are breaking our way. Like hitting a set on a flop, a NYC terror plot was busted today.

Life is good.

They _are_ finding harder to put those pieces together in a coherent manner, true. But the big spinners in prime time will have at it shortly.

Let me also add that I’m sure this is being parsed and sliced in the White House right now. Cheney was so spot on, that they can’t afford to allow this to go out without total spin. There’s got to be a big pow wow going on and they only have a few hours to get out ‘the word/phrase’ - which will be repeated on every MSM outlet. Put this in the bank.

If BHO was half as smart as Cheney he would be at least twice as smart as he is now!

Cheney is one of the sharpest people in our government’s service. (I purposely skipped the word politician!)

I hope W joins in to put Obamachev in a death lock.

This Bush thing - honor - W was treated with complete disrespect by the One. He owes Obamachev nothing.

Yeah, declaring war on Japan after Pearl Harbor was hasty, too.

The Bush Administration and the military were faced with very difficult decisions when they began taking prisoners.

-Do they go to jail, or to a prisoner of war camp? Where?

-Do they get a military tribunal or go through normal courtroom procedures?

-How far do we have to go to comply with their Muslim traditions?

They decided to set up Gitmo, knowing it wasn't ideal and that it would bring criticism. But the alternatives were less ideal.

Why can't some clever newswriter ask Obama to tell us what he would have done with the prisoners back when they were being captured?
