Banning the pickup truck
Las Vegas Review-Journal ^ | 21 may 09

Posted on 05/21/2009 3:57:09 AM PDT by rellimpank

The Tuesday headline was clear: "Obama's new rules will transform U.S. auto fleet."

The Associated Press picked it up from there: "Some soccer moms will have to give up hulking SUVs. Nearly everybody else will drive smaller cars, and more of them will run on electricity. The higher mileage and emissions standards set by the Obama administration on Tuesday, which begin to take effect in 2012 and are to be achieved by 2016, will transform the American car and truck fleet.

"The new rules would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon, about 10 mpg more than today's standards. Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg, light trucks 30 mpg. That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient."

Eric Fedewa, vice president of global powertrain forecasting for an auto consulting firm, told The AP the changes will make pickup trucks so much more expensive that they'll be used almost exclusively for work.

Oh, heavens. We're growing faint.

The wise and powerful wizard Obama, having loaned taxpayer money to Detroit to "bail them out" -- thus avoiding simple bankruptcy, where the firms might have shed their overly costly union contracts and emerged to renewed profitability -- now simply decrees what kind of cars Detroit will make. He might as well just put Howard Waxman, Charlie Rangel and Barney Frank in the executive offices at the Big Three, in fedoras and double-breasted striped zoot suits like Ayn Rand's Wesley Mouch, Cuffy Meigs, and Emma Chalmers, and have done with it.

Truck? Our truck caught on fire and wouldn't you know, all of our damn guns were in the thing, too? What are the chances? :)

We actually are pretty fuel efficient in our boating habits. Have a big Carolina Skiff that is easily powered by a 115 4 stroke. It gets us where we want to go on very little fuel. But many of my husband’s dive buddies have double outboards on their boats and the fuel consumption is staggering. We can spend the whole day out on 6-10 gallons of gas, but there’s a lot of scuba and free diving going on, so the boat is anchored much of the time. The double outboards really eat up the gas. I joke with my husband’s friends and say the cost of gas should not exceed the cost of going to the fish market to buy the same amount of fish you catch. :)

I won't roll over but neither will I naively tilt at windmills.

...I have children and grand children that must be free and I owe my life to those that gave theirs defending my freedom.

These are not empty words....but a solemn promise.

I’m thinking more like a “progressive” annual licensing tax equal to the age of your vehicle times $100. So, $0 for your shiny new Obamamobile, $100 for a 2009, $200 for a 2008,...., $2000 for my 1990 F250, $2600 for my 1987 Sable...

“I work contract all over the country and pull a 24 foot travel trailer with my F150..how am I supposed to get it to where it needs to be?”

Why do I even need to POST THIS??? Why do so few understand how the Democrat Socialist mind works?

You aren’t SUPPOSED to get it there, silly!! That just takes a job away from someone local.

Dude, ya’ got to get in to this whole spirit of “Change” thingy. It’s about SPREADING AROUND the prosperity.

You see, Obama’s Radical Socialist economic profs have been discussing this stuff at fancy teas on college campus’s for 30 years or more. And they just KNOW it will work out. After all, it’s worked everywhere else it’s been tried, right???

This means that unless the Federal Government gets rid of all those gas guzzleing SUV’s, NO ONE is going to take 0bama and his administration seriously or respect them.

I don't know about that. Didn't the Kremlin have huge numbers of large ZIVs and ZILs? And a tank or two?

All are equal in our new socialist nation, Comrade. Some are simply more equal than others. /sarcasm

Additionally, my Dodge parts inventory, (approximately $300,000.)

At the dealer, that's like 5 radiator caps and a pair of wiper blades...

This too shall pass. I remember when I was a kid and my rural relatives, only sixty miles from the city, couldn’t get many many things that were freely available there. The best they had was Western Auto where they could go and order things from the catalog. When the price of fuel “necessarily skyrockets”, and “that man” puts price controls on, nothing’s going to move.

Now, I’m not arguing with you. You’re correct, and I suspect you were thinking in very specific lines, nothing you “NEED” you can’t get from the village. I’m just saying we’re going to have to go backward for a while, and who’s to say that won’t be good for us?

Young people need to learn the virtue of making do with what they have. I have so much “stuff” that I’ve bought over the time of our prosperity, that my attitude is that I have to play with the toys I already have rather than go out and buy new toys. I remember my father, upon so many requests from me saying “That Costs MONEY”, which didn’t make much sense to me — of course it cost money, everythng costs money, and he had the magic wallet that always had money in it. Now *I* have the magic wallet, and the only way it has money in it is if I don’t spend it.

First they have to shut down thousands of salvage yards, then they have to eliminate mechanics. The idiots are about to free up a whole bunch of shade-tree mechanics. The work I can’t do on my old cars (I’m a bit old myself), “I got a guy” and he’s reasonable too!

Socialists ALWAYS exclude themselves from the rules they set for others.

The funny, and disgusting, part of it is, even your “rank and file” socialist who wants to put these bastards in power thinks that HE is going to be exempt.

I asked my lib-in-law yesterday about her HUGE Chevy SUV she uses for “estate saling”, and how she squares that with such vehicles being made essentially illegal with ‘bammy’s new rules. She insisted that she should/would still have the choice of the vehicle because she could afford it.

I pay my truck off as of my next paycheck! I’m not good with money, so it’s a big deal that I’ll have my own truck, all paid off. I’m NEVER going to buy another new car, NEVER, and I’m, God willing, not even going to buy a used car for many many years.

Yep, I was just thinking about how Bush would never attack Kerry in ‘04. It’s a miracle he won. I’m almost kind of sorry he won. As much as I detest Kerry, I didn’t consider him a threat to the republic, just a a-hole and a moron.

The voters didn’t “get it” that BO is not like them. I used to do intel and would warn people against “mirror imaging.” You can’t think that someone raised in another culture thinks like you and makes decisions like you. BO grew up in Jakarta and Honolulu. Even if you disregard the Jakarta, I’ve lived on Oahu, and Honolulu isn’t Omaha. The culture is completely different.

That’s another thing that I’m infuriated about -

the leftists that believe that it’s OK to impose socialism on the rest of us, believing that totalitarianism “won’t happen here” as a result.

No, maybe it “won’t happen here” - but simply because we’ll start shooting the bastards before we allow it.
