If you were trying to find a staff lawyer in Washington, D.C. who could automatically turn off party moderates and push the GOP further into its social issues cave, you'd have to look long and hard. Not Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-al.) though. He found one in record time after taking over the ranking Republican seat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. From the Legal Times:
The new chief Republican counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote a blog post last month in which he linked same-sex marriage to pedophilia, according to a Web site that has since been taken down.Race-baiting. Sexism, racism, and gayism (anti-gay prejudice) are the party's father's Chevrolet, not today's hybrid. Steve Schmidt was brave to try to move the party forward on the issue of gay marriagebut not this party. It's simply not ready. The post by William Smith responded to a recent speech by Steve Schmidt, a Republican campaign consultant who advised Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign. Speaking in Washington to the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights group, Schmidt had urged Republicans to support same-sex marriage.
“...push the GOP further into its social issues cave...”

Well just call me a bat then.
Its not ready because most Americans are not ready.
Its not marriage. Its shacking up under another name
and no amount of accusatory finger pointing and name
calling ‘bigots and homophobes’ will change that.
There, fixed it.
Thank you.
“Republican Staff Choice Shows GOP Isn’t Ready to Move Forward on Gay Marriage”
Gay marriage is not a “Move Forward”, its a move toward perversion.
The Republican position is the one shared by the majority of the American people.
The GOP will last longer than the USN&WR will.
No government in the history of this world, has legitimized homosexuality, to my knowledge.
It seems the United States might have good standing to retain it’s stance on the issue.
Duh!
The vocal activist butt boys just can’t accept the reality of it.
You mean it's not the same thing? Oh, it's a different kind of depravity? Maybe you protest too much, and the difference is really just a matter of degrees.
All of these comments presuppose that homosexual “marriage” is a popular issue, and that the GOP is somehow hurting itself by (weak) opposition.
How come, then, every time it gets voted on, it loses?
Popular issues are winning issues. Homosexual “marriage” always loses, EVEN IN CALIFORNIA.
What am I missing?
I hate the way liberal use value-laden, self-conratulatory terms like “foward” and justice” and “equality” to describe their agendas.
“Move forward” here is liberalese for “give up. We’re on the right side and you have to agree with us.” There does seem to be a cottage industry these days in liberal media land in pontificating to Republicans what actions they must take to...well, to what? The very last thing people such as the author want is for the Republicans to start winning elections. Thanks for the input, though.
Great! Why would the GOP want to pander to the side supported by only 30% of the American people?
Yeah, I know. To embrace “homosexual marriage” is to move backward.
You're missing the fact that steve-b lives in his own little self-contained fact space where things like "polls" and "election results" don't mean anything.
“The Republican position is the one shared by the majority of the American people.”
Along with that of the current pres_ent. I note NONE of the media seem to be taking zer0 to task over that.
