Russia threatens to bar Europeans who deny Red Army 'liberated' them

Eastern Europeans who believe their countries were occupied by the Soviet Union after the Second World War could soon be barred from Russia under new proposals given official weight by the Kremlin.

Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian president, created a commission of 28 legislators and senior intelligence officers which will identify foreign "revisionists" who "disparage the international prestige of the Russian Federation".

The move, condemned as "Orwellian" by its critics, comes shortly before the Russian parliament is expected to pass controversial legislation outlawing the "rehabilitation of Nazism".

The bill has attracted criticism because of its definition of Nazi rehabilitation, with those who "belittle" the Soviet Union's role in the war or criticise it in any way being regarded as equally culpable as those who glorify Hitler.

Those found to contravene the new law, which Russia insists is little different from Germany's Holocaust-denial legislation, face up to five years in prison. ....

Seen as a way of teaching recalcitrant former Soviet states respect, the legislation has won almost universal backing in the Russian parliament.

But opposition politicians, who have no representation in parliament, have attacked the bill, saying it effectively reintroduces state ideology for the first time since the fall of the Soviet Union.

"The creation of this commission allows the state to impose its own idea of political will and ideology," said Vladimir Ryzhkov, a former Duma deputy who was forced out of parliament in 2007 by a law banning independent MPs.

"The former KGB will once again decide what is anti-Soviet and what is not."

You mean as the Red Army waited outside Warsaw until the Germans crushed the Warsaw Uprising. Stalin wanted a Poland that would be easy for him to take over, and the absense of the resistance would help in that goal because they would have of course in turn resisted him. He let the Germans do his dirty work.

It wasn’t so much a “liberation” as it was a change in control.

This isn't a problem - as long as air quotes are allowed.

Seriously, Russians have apparently discovered that all of its neighbors don't like their country and are taking measures to ensure that that dislike turns into hatred. This is what happens when a whole country has an inferiority complex.

Meanwhile Russians hate being Russian so much they aren't breeding. By Russian government statistics for every three Russians born, four Russians die.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, to Mad Vlad and Dmitri his dancing bear.

You mean `Putingrad’?

Being barred from a country that is committing slow national suicide (see excellent post above) is hardly punishment of any sort.

I like Russian food, music, literature, and beautiful Russian women. But you don’t have to actually be in Russia to savor any of those.

But if you are in Russia, you will experience Russian politics and its effect upon ordinary humans, which has been horrific since the days of Alexander Nevskii.

Meanwhile on the other side of the continent Poles were fighting to liberate France.

Russia is a wonderful, senic country (well, the parts that aren’t horribly polluted).

I was there some years back. I loved at the Tiagi (Boreal) Forest areas. Of course since I was there to help clean up a massive oil spill, some of the areas were...ummmm, not so nice.

The country is very underpopulated. I wonder how long it will be before Chinese imports start to move in?

Did they tell Poland about Russia saving them from Hitler?

There might be a few dont recall the events of 1939 in quite the same way as the Russians.

They might want to check with the Finns too.

They already are. The Russian Far East has an illegal immigrant problem.

Long-term Chinese objectives:

1) Reunite Taiwan with the mainland.

2) Push American influence out of the Far East, reducing South Korea, Japan, etc. to satellite status.

3) Moving north. Lebensraum, baby.

The only question is, will the Chinese stop at the Urals, or will they decide to annex Russia up to Sankt Petrburg?

Who do you think the Russians will be looking to for help when the Chinese are ready to make their move?

They have already made some semi-offical comments about ‘white folks’ hanging together.

Generational warfare, something the Chinese excel at, based on history. THis time, they ahve a massive overage of young men, and few young women.... Be interesting to see how that works out.

Putin and his band of barbaric Bolsheviks never stop. Russia will always be stuck in a totalitarian 1984 style police state.

Would that also include when the Soviet Union “liberated” the Eastern half of Poland in 1939?
