'Skeptical Environmentalist' Doubts 'Underwater Manhattan' Global Warming Scenario
NewsBusters ^ | May 18, 2009 | Jeff Poor

One of the tricks in the global warming alarmist playbook over the years has been to show how global warming will cause sea levels to rise and flood the low-lying coastal areas where population centers happen to be, specifically lower Manhattan in New York City.

However, the imagery used by Al Gore in his "An Inconvenient Truth" and by various other global warming made-for-television specials isn't scientifically accurate according to Bjørn Lomborg, author of "Cool It: The Skeptical Environmentalist's Guide to Global Warming."

Lomborg was asked by Gene Epstein in the May 18 issue of Barron's if it would be "smart to prevent global warming as soon as possible -- to avoid seeing Manhattan under 20 feet of water in ten years?"

These doomsday scenarios would be laughable if people didn't believe them so...

Computer generated imagery if I might say so.

If people had a proper high school science education, the falsity of plant food doing harm would be laughed off the stage. People believe because they are ignorant and lack knowledge. Ignorant people, the tools of tyrants since the beginning of time.

People who see the graphic scenes of waves of flood waters coursing through city streets with people on the run trying to escape the waters and are scared by what they see are complete idiots...

For floods to occur like those predicted, the temperatures would have to rise so fast and so high to melt ice so rapidly that we’d all be fried anyway...*LOL*

One Question; Where is all the water going to come from ? I for one would like to see some calculation’s on this using the earths ocean area.

Has anybody ever actually done the math and computed the volume of water spread ALL across the earth's surface that would ensue IF the polar ice caps, ie Greenland and Antarctica, were to actually melt? Plus the centrifugal forces causing the bulge at the equator?..............

Before it is submerged it needs a major enviromental clean up. There are some nice green jobs. Demolish the big apple and clean the land. That will keep us busy while it goes under.

I think the whole thing is a non-issue. However, people have worked out that a relatively short canal could be dug from the Mediterranean to the Qattara Depression in north Africa and drain off vast amounts of ocean water. A rise in ocean levels would be forestalled (and tremendous hydro-electric power would be generated).

The long and short: Manhattan will not be flooded.

I think it has been done. If *all* the ice melted, the level wouls rise several feet, but that would mean the whole Antarctic ice pack, and Greenland ice pack would go, and that would mean a significant rise in temp, even during the winter months, to keep all the inland water from refreezing long enough to make it to the ocean.

It was ok if you just considered it the fiction that it was.

Other than that, it is just a collosal waste of time.

"Lomborg was asked by Gene Epstein in the May 18 issue of Barron's if it would be "smart to prevent global warming as soon as possible -- to avoid seeing Manhattan under 20 feet of water in ten years?"

Manhattan is going to be flooded out because of "global warming"- the definition of which seems to be 10 years of progressive cooling, this past winter and now "summer" being the coolest of those past ten years, and the coolest of the entire 20th century.

Yet somehow, the north pole ice cap is melting, even though the average temp has been between -40f and -50f. Funny how ice melts at that temperature.

In other news, swimming pool sales are down this year, as are summer fashions; shorts, sandals, halter tops and swim wear.

Yes. If all the ice caps melted, the ocean would not rise one inch.

The Qattara Depression in central Egypt has been proposed as a hydroelectric project by taking water from the Mediterranean sea and diverting it to a desolate region that is well below sea level.

Due to the immense size of the region and high evaporation rates in the hot Sahara desert, it alone is capable of absorbing all but the most lunitic projected sea level increases.

More importantly, it would generate a tremendous amount of electricity for Egypt.

Nope. it wouldn't rise an inch. Most of the ice is on water, which it displaces, all the ice on water melting would result in a ssea level decrease. All the landbound ice causes the land (crust0 to sink into the mantle, causing the mantle under the sea to bulge upwards pushing up the basalt layer under the Atlantic, and crust under the pacific(south and antarctic ). If all the ice melted at the soth pole, Artic land masses and greenland, those land masses would rize upwards, lowering sea levels.

Boy howdy, that is one big hole in the ground

the Qattara Depression is a desert basin within the Libyan Desert of north-western Egypt. The Depression, at 133 m below sea level, contains the second lowest point in Africa (The lowest being Lake Assal in Djibouti). The Depression covers about 18,000 km² (7,000 square miles), a size comparable to Lake Ladoga, and at its maximum is 80 km in length and 120 km in width. The bottom of the depression consists of a salt pan.
