Michelle Obama's Early Alienation From the University of Chicago: UC Merced Speech Transcript
Chicago Sun Times ^ | May 18, 2009 5:20 AM | Lyn Sweet

First lady Michelle Obama for the second time has talked about how alienated she was from the University of Chicago when she was growing up on the South Side.

Mrs. Obama commented about her relationship with the U. of C. in a commencement address she delivered Saturday at the University of California, Merced -- echoing remarks she made to children in March at a school here.

The context: Many of the UC Merced graduates were the first in their families to earn college degrees, and Mrs. Obama said, "By using what you have learned here, you can shorten the path perhaps for kids who may not see a path at all.

"I was once one of those kids. Most of you were once one of those kids," and then told the students how she grew up just a few miles from the University of Chicago.

"Yet that university never played a meaningful role in my academic development. The institution made no effort to reach out to me -- a bright and promising student in their midst -- and I had no reason to believe there was a place for me there.

"Therefore, when it came time for me to apply to college, I never ... considered the university in my own backyard as a viable option."

She went on to earn degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law.

Ironically, the U. of C. would become a focal point of her life: She was a high-level administrator at the school and medical center; President Obama taught at the law school for many years; their daughters attended the Lab School; their close friends are on U of C boards and were major presidential campaign fund-raisers and many members of the Obama White House have ties to the institution anchoring Hyde Park.

Maybe it was because she wasn't that bright or that promising. This is demonstrated by that very sentence: there is no 'their' when referring to the university and she wasn't in its 'midst' unless she was actually a part of the university instead of just being on the south side like it was.

Thank God for White People’s little program called “Affirmative Action” without that, neither you or your husband had the academic prowess to enter elite universities; but due to your skin color, intellect was ignored and somehow social engineering came to the rescue. Now, via a blubbering, lying Marxist press and political correctness, we have a junior league Communist pressing us towards a collective, Socialist Utopia...

“She went on to earn degrees from Princeton and Harvard Law.”

###

Which speaks VOLUMES about the validity of those institutions and their hideously overrated educations.

“The institution made no effort to reach out to me”

What’s with all these people saying others should “reach out” to them or to some group?

How about instead quit the whining, get off your butt, and work hard without any desire for or expectation of a hand-out, quota, or affirmative action gimme?

Wow. Was it because of your race or because colleges tend not reach out to anyone, unless they apply? I don't see colleges helping the academic development of high school students - that's why they are colleges and not high schools. Why did you deserve any more than what everyone else in the United States had? And so sorry you were treated so badly by the academic community that you only got to go to Princeton for undergrad.

I’d love for some enterprising journalist to file a FOIA to get her transcripts. I think we have the right to know exactly how stellar her academic performance was.

Actually, I’m not sure that’s true. From all that I’ve heard from people who went to school with Obama, none of them say he lacks intellect. They DO say, however, that he was a schmoozer with those in power. He knew how to fall in alongside of just the right people to get to where he was going. I agree that both Obamas seem to be Marxists and hate America. But even Mrs. Obama doesn’t seem to lack intellect to me. In fact, I’d say that she’s the more articulate of the two of them.

This would be like someone with a great musical talent complaining that the recording industry didn't reach out to him. You've got to put yourself out there so the industry can see that there's something worthwhile. One major part of being worthwhile is the desire to achieve as demonstrated by great effort toward that end. If you don't knock, the door doesn't get opened. No sense later in bitching about a closed door.

Mayeb...just maybe its all been because of her insufferably miserable and beotchy attitude and not race.

If I was blind and hearing her, thats what I’d think...
