GOP sounds alarm on Latino voter gap [Graham, Steele, Martinez, Crist] [amnesty] [RINO wars]
Politico ^ | 2009-05-18 | Ben Smith

Posted on 05/18/2009 9:02:56 AM PDT by rabscuttle385

The Republican Party has scarcely begun to repair a wound that threatens to confine it to minority status: its 2006 collapse among Hispanic voters.

Driven by some Republicans’ sharp attacks on illegal immigration and — as many Hispanics perceived it, immigrants in general — Latino voters fled the GOP en masse in the midterm elections, then turned on John McCain, as well.

. . . . .

There are stirrings of a Republican response. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has spoken with Hispanic leaders about creating a new organization to back Latino candidates. Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele has made minority outreach a priority at the RNC. And some Republicans see an opening if Obama continues to defer action on overhauling immigration.

. . . . .

A spokesman for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Brian Walsh, said that candidate recruitment for 2010 is still under way and noted that Martinez himself had endorsed Crist, in part for his moderate stance on immigration.

But Graham, who said he sympathized with the Senate Republican leadership’s decision to back a candidate with a good chance of winning, also raised concerns about the Florida decision.

“The key for our party is to have Hispanic candidates to carry our banner,” Graham said. “I don’t blame them for trying to make sure we don’t lose another seat in Florida. But at the same time, clearly Mr. Rubio is the type of person who would lead our party in Florida and the country to a new level.”

Graham said he’s considering forming a political action committee, or some other entity, aimed at recruiting strong Hispanic Republican candidates.

Is everyone posting on this site a conservative in your eyes?

There are many posters here who are moderate conservatives or just plain moderates.

A hell of a lot fewer than there were before the great Giuliani purge of "moderates". We are told that a Romney purge of "moderates" is already being prepared in case it is needed.

Rather than pile on more let me try a different tact. Can you name the five largest fundamental differences between the RNC and the DNC? What are the five factors that can be used by an undecided voter to let them know what party they are most closely aligned with?

From Fox News: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,520559,00.html

"Views on how to handle illegal immigrants show little change. Half of Americans (50 percent) favor setting up a system for illegal immigrants to become legal residents — slightly more than the 43 percent who favor deporting as many as possible. These results are almost identical to findings from a June 2007 poll when 51 percent favored setting up a system to help illegals become legal and 39 percent favored deportation."

You are solidly in the minority.

"Which of my claims did I not back up?"

Here's one:

"That poll is contradicted by Rasmussen Reports which shows R and D voter identification as about even."

I'm pretty sure we've had these conversations before. You are just WAY too familiar. Which of the OBL's are you reincarnated from?

Since you'd like to see 'nativist extremists' purged, you'd probably enjoy this thread. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/2249439/posts

Now, I'm going to find someone more interesting to talk to, like my cat, who even understands what boundries and borders are.

Secure Fences Work at White House May 15, 2009

Open-border advocates often claim that fences don't work. Why, then, does the White House have a secure, dual perimeter fence (both metal and "virtual") and limited points of entry—with officials doing quick background checks at each?

Answer: Because fences work to filter the good from the bad. This fact was just illustrated at the White House yesterday when two illegal aliens attempted to enter the premises for a tour. The individuals were taken into custody after a routine background check by the Secret Service uncovered that they had outstanding immigration orders against them.

So the President is safe, but what about the rest of us?

It's not that difficult to imagine such a system along our national borders. Is it too much to ask that our government protect those of us not fortunate enough to live in a gated community?

Well that will exclude me since I did not support either in the primary. I voted for Fred Thompson.

If you are not with the GOP, you are with the Democrats.

Too bad that they're now one and the same.

Most conservatives will still support the GOP regardless if the GOP supports a pathway to citizenship.

You show up on a conservative (not necessarily Republican) Internet forum, defend the McCains and other assorted RINOs, and basically say that conservatives have nowhere to go but into the arms of the RINO Party?

If you think we're that desperate or that stupid, then you can go to hell, RINO newbie shill.

Here you go:

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/mood_of_america/congressional_ballot/generic_congressional_ballot

During calendar 2009, Democratic support has ranged from 38% to 42%, while the Republican range has been from 35% to 41%.

And

For the second straight week, the latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 40% would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate while 39% would choose the Democrat.

McCain is seen as the leader of the GOP by most Republicans.

Great strategery! Let a Democrat "lead" the Republican Party right into the dustbin of history.

What? Are you John McCain’s puppet? You are delusional. You know it depends how the questions are asked. 43% want them all deported! And one poll does not equal reality. Now, you’ve wasted enough of my time.

Compilation of older polls.

Poll: Voters Unaware of Candidates’ Immigration Positions
McCain Supporters Farthest Off the Mark

Download the pdf version

WASHINGTON (March 31, 2008) –A new poll using neutral language finds that primary and caucus voters have little knowledge of candidates’ immigration positions. The results also show that voters often do not share their candidate’s position.

Among the findings:

* Only 34 percent of McCain voters, 42 percent of Clinton voters, and 52 percent of Obama voters correctly identified their candidate as favoring eventual citizenship for illegal immigrants who meet certain requirements.

* Of McCain voters, 35 percent mistakenly thought he favored enforcement that would cause illegals to return home, another 10 percent thought he wanted mass deportations, and 21 percent didn’t know his position.

* Voters often held different positions from the candidate they supported. Only 31 percent of McCain voters had the same immigration position as he does. For Clinton voters, 45 percent shared her position; 61 percent of Obama voters shared his position.

* This lack of knowledge, coupled with disagreements with their candidates’ positions, makes it very difficult to draw any conclusions about the fact that all three remaining candidates favor legalization for illegal immigrants.

* Whoever wins the presidency will face significant opposition to giving eventual citizenship to illegal immigrants. Just 25 percent of Republican and 50 percent of Democratic primary/caucus voters said they would support such an effort.

* Pro-enforcement voters have a greater intensity of views than supporters of legalization. Among Republicans, almost nine out of ten who favored causing illegals to return home said they strongly supported that view; on the other hand, fewer than half of Republicans who backed legalization strongly supported that view.

* This greater intensity also exists among Democrats. Of Democrats who favored causing illegals to return home, more than seven out of ten strongly supported that view; on the other hand, fewer than six out of ten who favored legalization strongly supported that view.

When illegals immigrants are made legal they will start paying more taxes and thus will not be as supportive of redistribution's schemes as supported by the Democrats.

Speaking in general I think that is a pipe dream. McCain offered amnesty (leading to citizenship) and Obama offered freebies. As in Occam's Razor...or "“The simplest explanation for a phenomenon is most likely the correct explanation"...you can tell that illegal Mexicans care more about free social services than citizenship. I think the reason they want amnesty is only so they don't have the fear of deportation, not that there is a burning desire to become taxpaying American citizens. You just don't see that in these protests that have been held. And what about the next wave of illegal aliens who will undercut those granted amnesty?

Leave newbee ‘j.simmons;’ alone. The republican party doesnt have to have any principles. In fact we could probably beat Obama by nominating Hillary, she will get the Hispanic and the Abortion votes both as well as the single payer health care voters. . Bill Clinton groupies too. Stop being so intolerant

Good sound fiscal and moral policy stances attract all players. Strong law and order attracts all players.

We have abdicated these stances, and now find ourselves failing to attract the Hispanic vote. Bud, we’re losing a lot more than the Hispanic vote.

Our party has fallen down, and it can’t get up.

Hispanics expect the laws of our nation to be enforced. Their jobs are the first jobs that are lost when a new wave of illegal immigrants comes into the U.S. They don’t like that any more than we do.

So I say, get back to basics. Stand up for what you know to be right. Enforce all the laws on the books. Put an end to people jobbing the United States to excess.

Cut taxes, offer a hand up and not a hand out.

Successful people, people who are not oppressed by big government, will support those who advocate for the policies that allow this.

We have failed our calling, as a party. We are paying for that. We have nobody to blame but ourselves.

I have spoken to Hispanics on this topic a lot, and almost to a person they think we are the biggest chumps on the planet earth, to allow what we have allowed the illegal immigrants to do.

Spot on.

For starters, just take a look at Robert Rector's excellent studies at the Heritage Foundation.

I hope you are right. The only Hispanic we have at our business is a Jew-hating Che Guevara supporter and feels white imperialists are the scourge of the earth and need to be eradicated.

You either stumbled across another member of the McCain/Specter wing of the party or a troll. Hard to tell which is which these days.
