As has been pointed out on FR, this is the real reason to slaughter the pigs, it is a way of doing economic damage to the Coptic Christian community.

I don’t want to see the video. I can imagine it well enough, thank you. It’s despicable the treatment of these animals, whether you agree with Egypt’s seemingly unscientific method of illness eradication or not. There are many more HUMANE methods of culling an animal population if for some reason it ever became necessary (God gave us dominion over animals for a reason).

Sell them to another country that isn’t afraid to eat the pork even — unless there is something the Egyptian’s know about their specific pig population that means necessary and immediate eradication (like an experiment gone horribly awry? LOL).

As far as I understand it, to Muslims pigs are the same as infidels - perhaps a BIT lower, but not much. Is it any surprise that this is the type of war they wage when it comes down to it? (Brutal and horribly inhumane...)

PETA is probably all upset about the treatment of the animals, but when it comes to the treatment of people... not so concerned. They have no clue that some of these same people would love to do the same to their very families — NOT ALL, DEFINITELY NOT ALL — but SOME would like to do the same to them no matter what “side” they profess to support — you are a slave, or you die. These PETA folks just don’t get it, and they will be yelling the loudest on this issue.

I never thought of the economic angle of this, honestly. Thank you for bringing it up. It wouldn’t surprise me a bit if this was “political” (read: religious) persectution as well.

I had been wondering why there were so many pigs in a largely Muslim Country like Egypt. I had not thought of the Coptic Christians. God bless them. The Lord will provide in some way.

They could definitely use our prayers, though — for strength and courage, they are regularly persecuted in that land...

The clip posted by independent newspaper Al-Masri Al-Yom includes gory images of pigs being beaten with iron bars, piglets being stabbed and animals being kicked alive into bulldozer buckets.

Although like Saddam, they beat their victims with iron bars, they did not cut their heads off, slowly and with a dull blade, as their brother Arabs did, to various humans. Of course cutting their heads off, quickly and with a sharp blade, would be about as merciful as anyone ever is when killing hogs.

The government-controlled Al-Ahram weekly alleged there was chaos at Bassatin, the large abattoir in Cairo where the pigs are supposed to be slaughtered humanely at a rate of 1,200 per day.

"Only the males are killed in accordance with the rules," said journalist Heba Nasreddin, while "the piglets and sows are hit with an iron bar and left to bleed to death."

Seems to be a pattern here...
