From the image it looks like they are pretty close-in fighting it, so I would imagine they are not too worried about it expanding to other flammable sources. Hopefully the “no reports of injuries” stays that way.

Explosion rocks Sunoco chemical refinery

Massive explosions rocked the Sunoco refinery in the Marcus Hook area tonight, sending flames shooting into the night and sounding alarms in three states.
The actual explosions were in Delaware but close to the Pennsylvania border. Some officials were reporting that the chemicals in the explosion could waft into South Jersey. The explosions were first heard shortly after 10 p.m.
The flames could be seen as far as 10 miles away at the Philadelphia airport.
Safety officials were considering widespread evacuations and police were blocking off roads around the refineries, one of the largest on the East Coast, according TV reports.
Sunoco officials did not have official information on the cause. A union official said he did not know if anyone was hurt but that the refinery was staffed.
Isn’t ethylene part of the brew of MOABs?
Beats me. Just a civilian FReeper here.
Maybe some FReeper knows.
That would add an aspect to this.
I’ll go ahead and speculate: could it have been a hacker?

SNIPPET: “The blast happened about 10:20 p.m. at the refinery, located at Blueball and Post Road, and was reported under control about 11:45 p.m. The exact location of the fire inside of the plant was unclear.”
SNIPPET: “According to several Delaware County officials, the location of the fire site was believed to be in the Claymont section of the refinery.”
SNIPPET: “Reports were the chemical was ethylene oxide, a classified carginogenic. The chemical reportedly loses its toxicity once ignited.”
SNIPPET: “About six fire companies were reported to be on the scene about 15 minutes after the blast.
That is in addition to Sun Oils fire company. It was setting up a staging area on Ridge Road.
Lower Chichester Police Chief Tom Gaspari said that at around 11 p.m., police were closing off roads near the refinery.”

“Explosion rocks Sunoco chemical refinery; evacuations averted”
By Bob Fernandez
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
SNIPPET: “The explosion came three days after Pennsylvania fined the Marcus Hook refinery $762,150 in civil penalties for air-quality permit violations.
“Sunoco emitted nearly twice the permitted limit of particulate matter and an average of four times the permitted level of ammonia from a unit at this facility for more than one year,” Environmental Protection Southeast Regional Director Joseph A. Feola said in a statement. “We take these violations very seriously, and are working with Sunoco to correct the problems.”
The problems were discovered in tests done by Sunoco in 2006.”
This is chump change for a business like that.
Four times the permitted ammonia. The collective urine of the tomcats in Delaware probably out-emits that.
“The collective urine of the tomcats in Delaware probably out-emits that.”
Well now, that’s a vivid description.
Thanks HiTech RedNeck.
Jihadi’s practicing or what?
Then when it blows they let it burn to lower cleanup expense hours.
Ahhhhh...
Thx.
