Thank You, Military Recruiters, May 15, 2009,

Dateline: Silver Spring, Md.

On Friday, May 15, 2009, members of the Free Republic, DC Chapter went to the Armed Forces Recruiting Center in Silver Spring to thank the recruiters for their service. The AFRC is about a mile up Georgia Ave from the front gate of Walter Reed.

We spent our time with three Navy recruiters, as the Army and the Marine recruiters were at Andrews Air force Base preparing for this weekend’s air show.

We heard that recruiting goals are being met, that re-enlistments are high and that fewer are getting out.

This recruiting center is planned to move several blocks north into newer quarters in the coming year.

That’s a heck of an idea! I often pass by the local recruiter’s office while shopping and a couple times I’ve thought of stopping by and just saying “Hi”. I signed up in 1986 for delayed entry, went in in 1987, did 4.5 years active, and finished out my 20 in the National Guard. I owe a lot to my Army Recruiter for how well my life turned out.

I think we as a conservative and/or veteran community should make it a point to thank these guys and gals for the work they do. Especially for those that serve in urban or liberal anti-military areas.

The next time I’m in Starbucks I’ll get a couple gift cards to drop off with the Army guys at the recruiter’s office. I’ll walk in and ask for the lowest ranking recruiter there and give him the card. I might give one to a Marine recruiter also if he’s nice just cuz my roommate in Kuwait was a former Marine and Gulf War vet.

Let’s make this a new FreeRepublic tradition like the folks in DC outside the Medical Center!

Thank You for your service. Yep, Marines are good people - from the father of an active duty Marine.

Actually this is a national event in its 3rd year. Check out this year's notice.

It was started by Gathering of Eagles after their Troop Rally in March, '07.

If you want on the D.C. chapter Master Ping List we alert a lot of FReepers to this type of events.

I dropped sticky buns to the recruiter station in Woodbury (South Jersey) on Saturday. Although the office space includes all the branches (except Coast Guard),only the Navy was there at the time. So I reminded them “One Team, One Fight” and asked them to share with anyone else.

PS I walked in saying “Happy Armed Forces Day”. The recruiter responded, “I’ve never been wished that before” and someone else in the office said “Then why are we working?” To which I replied, “It’s never made sense to me either and that’s why you all got this!”
