His battle against terminal brain cancer a day-to-day struggle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy this weekend marks a year since a grim diagnosis gave him just 90 days to live.
Kennedys fight with a deadly tumor called a glioma has been waged against a little-mentioned fact: A source close to the family says doctors initially predicted he had three months at most to survive. That was in late May 2008.
He really is an inspiration for people with this thing called cancer, said David Bartlett, 41 of West Warwick, R.I., who is being treated for a brain tumor at Massachusetts General Hospital. It has affected me in certain ways, but I have never been content to let it overcome me. And it seems like hes got the same attitude.
Friends believe the extensive surgery Kennedy underwent at Duke University Medical Center shortly after his diagnosis has helped him prolong his life dramatically. Because of Kennedys age and condition, the chance of paralysis or death from the tricky surgery was high. Since then, the iconic lawmaker has gotten regular treatments at Massachusetts General Hospital...
But since his diagnosis, Kennedy has provided moments of drama that have inspired many.
I pledge to you that I will be there next January on the floor of the United States Senate when we begin the term of Barack Obama, Kennedy said, to chants of Teddy, Teddy in Denvers Pepsi Center at the 2008 Democratic Convention.
He was indeed there at Obamas inauguration - and back in the Senate to cast crucial health care votes and fight for legislation he has called the cause of my life.

Oh, spare me.
The REAL inspiration here is the American Medical Care that saved his life. Ironically, he wants to destroy it...
Longer than the chick in the lake got.
I bet even the Dem’s are thinking...”I wish he would hurry up and die.”
mary jo has waited a long time to see him pass......she can wait a bit longer.
Peter Tork (of Monkees fame) has a rare form of cancer and I find him much more inspiring through it.
Old, bitter communists take forever to die.
His continued mortality is pretty amazing, but I’d figured he have a good shot at a year. He could be with us several more years. He may not get through the next week.
Knocking on wood, I suppose that could be said of me, too!
‘Kennedy has provided moments of drama that have inspired many’
Blow it out your Seagram hole Swimmer. After my surg & rad for Ca I promised myself never to be remotely like you.
Whenever you have cancer, doctors always tell you you are about to die very soon.
That way if you live longer, they look like miracle workers and if you die, your survivors are less likely to sue them for killing you.
Oh, but since he's a Kennedy, we're all supposed to believe the pampered pickled sot is some sort of tough old crumudgeon.
Or maybe God has granted him some extra time on this mortal coil, because he still has some campaign workers, babies and hookers to kill. Can't leave all that to the younger Kennedys, though they do their very best.
Investigators found it difficult to understand why he was crossing Dyke Bridge when he said he was attempting to reach Edgartown which was in the opposite direction. They also could not understand why he was driving so fast on this unlit, uneven, road. They also could not work out how Kennedy escaped from the car. When it was recovered from the water all the doors were locked. Three of the windows were either open or smashed in. If Kennedy, a large-framed 6 foot 2 inches tall man could manage to get out of the car, why was it impossible for Mary Jo Kopechne, a slender 5 foot 2 inches tall, not do the same?
Local experts could not understand why Kennedy (and later, Markham and Gargan) could not rescue Kopechne from the car. It also surprised investigators that Kennedy did not seek help from Pierre Malm, who only lived 135 metres from the bridge. At the inquest Kennedy was unable to answer this question.
There were also doubts about the way Kopechne died. Dr. Donald Mills of Edgartown, wrote on the death certificate: "death by drowning". However, Gene Frieh, the undertaker, told reporters that death "was due to suffocation rather than drowning". John Farrar, the diver who removed Kopechne from the car, claimed she was "too buoyant to be full of water". It is assumed that she died from drowning, although her parents filed a petition preventing an autopsy.
Other questions were asked about Kennedy's decision to swim back to Edgartown. The 150 metre channel had strong currents and only the strongest of swimmers would have been able to make the journey safely. Also no one saw Kennedy arrive back at the Shiretown Inn in wet clothes. Ross Richards, who had a conversation with Kennedy the following morning at the hotel described him as casual and at ease.
Kennedy did not inform the police of the accident while he was at the hotel. Instead at 9am he joined Gargan and Markham on the ferry back to Chappaquiddick Island. Steve Ewing, the ferry operator, reported Kennedy in a jovial mood. It was only when Kennedy reached the island that he phoned the authorities about the accident that had taken place the previous night.
Dr. Robert Watt, Kennedy's family doctor, explained his patient's strange behaviour by claiming he was in a state of shock and confusion and "possible concussion."
Yep, straight forward accident. Could happen to anyone. NOT
Only the good die young. Douche bags like Kennedy, Castro, Mao, Stalin live for what seems like forever.
May Teddy’s last days be filled with screaming agony.
Mary Jo is waiting patiently to slap his big red face.
I know you’re not a beer drinker Teddy, but I have a 12 pack of Budweiser I intend to recycle and use for a sparkle-free rinse for your headstone.
He deprived Mary Jo of her right to medical care...
lucky for him he’s not on government healthcare.
You’ll have to stand in back of the spouse and I. We have a 30 pack of Miller. We also plan on adding an architectural look to the headstone, as soon as the chili-feta cheese-saurkraut-jalapeno-coney islands kick in.
Have a few more gin and tonics Ted. I sure won’t miss ya’.
