North Dakota's Board of Higher Education has agreed to drop the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian head logo, a move intended to resolve a decades-long campus dispute about whether the name demeans American Indians.

“As a diehard (die, being the operative prefix) Eagles fan, I hope one day that the Washington Redskins are forced to change their name. heh heh”

Having Cherokee ancestors, imho names like the Fighting Sioux (or Chiefs, Braves, or Warriors) are not insulting. Nor are teams named after tribes (like the FSU Seminoles.) They are part of American history and culture, and these names highlight POSITIVE aspects of native-Americans from the past.

Redskins IS insulting. That is the one indian team name that does need to be changed.

I despise these half-measures by the liberals. Let's go all the way. Let's erase the Indians from American history, it's demeaning after all. Let's pull a trick from the Muslims and simply condemn everything that came before. Indians didn't exist before Columbus arrived. They did nothing worthwhile and let's destroy all their artifacts. Starting with re-naming college mascots.

Let's go on and re-name everything with an Indian language root word. Let's de-legalize the tribes and tribal governments. Come on Liberals, why mess around. Marx was all for erasing the smaller peoples and replacing them with the great administrative nations.

There are three NCAA schools who play Div 1-A football and basketball; whose nicknames do not end in S, are not an animal and are not a color.

So now the politically correct debate about Indian nicknames for sports teams is back in the news.

Nobody ever talks about other allegedly insulting names.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish - are they implying Irishmen are violent?

San Diego Padres - deameaning to the Catholic Church, isn’t it?

Boston Celtics - another insult to people of Irish or Celtic origins

Pittsburgh Pirates - after the recent incident with Somali pirates, we’re all reminded that we’re honoring criminals with such a nickname.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - same as Pittsburgh Pirates

Dallas Cowboys - demeaning to the ranchers and cowboys

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - an insult to religion and the concept of angels?????

Kansas City Royals, Sacramento Kings - an insult to royal families everywhere.

San Francisco Giants - an insult to those with the problem of large bodies?

Portland Trail Blazers - we can’t honor this harkening back to the Oregon Trail, because after all, under PC ideology, this entire continent was stolen from the indigenous peoples.

Milwaukee Brewers - we don’t want to encourage drinking and alcoholism. This name has got to go.

Texas Rangers - a nod to the law enforcement agency. But what with police brutality and all that, we can’t have such a team nickname.

Seattle Mariners - demeaning to sailors and the navy.

New England Patriots - too jingoistic. Who are we to claim patriotism as something honorable? We haven’t lived up to our highest ideals so we can’t have such a name. We have no right to call ourselves patriotic.

New York Jets - in the era of global warming, we can’t say anything that is favorable to jet planes.

Buffalo Bills - I understand that the real Buffalo Bill didn’t have a politically correct 21st century worldview. Out he goes.

I’m sure there are other offensive team names out there. You get the idea, there are many objections we can raise.

Don’t get me started on all the animal team names. When PETA weighs in , all of those will have to go also.

Were the names Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull demeaning to animals?

Perhaps an updated Indian name would be more fitting.

The Fighting Casinos - Everybody wears the Number 21.

The Crapshoots - Everybody wears the Number 7

The Fighting Slots - Might not work for the women's sports.

This stuff about team names demeaning Native Americans is politically-correct nonsense. It is actually a sign of respect and honor to have a sports team (or military unit) name itself for you. Native Americans named THEMSELVES after animals that fought or hunted well, e.g. eagles, wolves, bears, and so on (a practice adopted by, for example, the Philadelphia Eagles and Chicago Bears).

I have yet to hear Greek-Americans complain about the Michigan State Spartans, or Appalachian people complain about the U. West Virginia Mountaineers. Poland has a soccer team called the Husaria (named for the famous winged cavalry of the 17th century).

“Fighting Sioux” is, or should be, an honor to the Sioux people because it reminds people that the Sioux were once among the best mounted warriors on earth.

Note also that our Armed Forces name weapons for various Native Americans, e.g. Blackhawk helicopters, and I think there is a Cherokee weapon system as well.

Just you wait...you think the “Eagles” are going to get a free pass...:)

I am sure the “Patriots” cannot last much longer as a name either...can’t have THAT!

Until 1930, they were known as the “Flickertails” a type of ground squirrel.

There’s an intimidating mascot.

You forgot Vikings...

Having some Nordic blood in me and being the tall/blonde/blue-eyed warrior type, I am deeply offended.

Gosh I hate this PC crap!

When did everyone start getting offended by everything. Grow some thicker skin, people.

When Eastern Michigan changed the names of its teams from "Hurons," the tribe begged it not to do it. EMU did it, anyway.

It's fairly safe to assume that not all of the Sioux want the name changed.

If you read the article you would have seen that in a 2-1 vote the supposed offended individuals supported the use of the name. This is just PCism run amok as usual.

As I have always said, it is the whiney, wimpy liberal whites who throw a temper tantrum like a 2 year old over these things. Usually, the tribe(s) in question support keeping it (as noted above).
