Mr Obama fears a backlash against U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Further images purportedly from the 2,000 include one of a naked man covered in excrement with a guard standing in front of him.
Others yet to be released are alleged to show guards threatening to sexually assault a detainee with a broomstick and hooded prisoners in transport planes with copies of Playboy magazine showing naked women open on their laps.
The president had previously committed to allowing them to be seen but changed his mind after senior generals said it could place U.S. troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in greater danger.
The images were released in Australia yesterday where they were originally obtained by the television channel SBS in the wake of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal.
The release comes at an inopportune time for President Obama who is trying to build bridges with the Islamic world.
President Obama earlier vowed to fight to block the release of the 2,000 'inflammatory' photographs showing the abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers. He had previously said the administration would not oppose a court ruling demanding the release of hundreds of the classified photos.
This followed his decision to release the U.S. Justice Department memos detailing CIA interrogation methods, such as waterboarding, that he has now outlawed as torture. Aides say he changed his mind on the photos because 'he did not feel comfortable' with their release. He has asked his legal advisors to present a new case to judges saying that making the pictures public could imperil national security.
The White House legal team is now preparing for a June 9 deadline to present its case that it would be against the interests of national security to make them public.

Zero laughs at 9/11 jokes.
I don’t understand leaking photos from the Abu Ghraib scandal in 2009. The story’s done & over with. What’s the up side?
B.O. wanted these photos leaked, period. He just didn’t want to be held responsible for this happening. This explains his CYA teleprompter reading the other day.
“I dont understand leaking photos from the Abu Ghraib scandal in 2009. The storys done & over with. Whats the up side?”
The only thing I can conclude which seems to fit the available data best is that this administration hates america.
I wonder who ordered the article at the Daily Mail killed?
That’s very interesting and will be grist for a further story in and of itself.
It's about indicting President Bush.
You hit square onto what my assertion suggests - that is that whomever the leaker (or leakers) are, they are predominantly leaking for the Dems. Or they appear to be. If this agency becomes a one-party outfit what then does another party do about that?
Are they in-fact an agency whose majority is that of the liberal Democrat Party?, I don't know? But I do have some understanding of basic statistics and I would like to see a histogram of the "leaks" and how they played out (party to party). Stats (in this case) would seem to bear this out no?
I think San Fran Nan is a special cause in that she (not her Party per se) has called them out and I have to think they are going to leak on her so they watch her die a death of a thousand cuts. So - her "leakage" IMO won't count to my suggested point.
That’s what I was thinking. I can just see him publically being against releasing the photos and in private saying, “Release them.”
It seems crazy to me that they are allowed to have private cameras in places like that, altho I suppose in this day and age it would be virtually impossible to stop it.
It’s gonna be juicy. Obama is going to find out what it is to be on the receiving end now.
His defecate skin won’t be thick enough to take the bashing Bush did though.
This is just the beginning to what is going to be leaked out ..
link broken
None of this stuff is torture, but it is humiliating. And I wonder if there is a context for the humiliation. For example, were the terrorists being punished for behavior violations, or were they just being humiliated because they are terrorists?
I'm inclined to think that we should not be humiliating anyone for our own amusement or pleasure- but at the very least, if it does occur, is it too much to ask that there are NO CAMERAS present?
Are the pictures worse than the sounds of people saying goodbye to their loved ones before they burned to death from jet fuel exploding in their offices?
We need to go toe to toe with them on this - show OUR pictures - play our video's.
We didn't start this - they did...
Update at 1:15 p.m. ET: We spoke to Lt. Col. Patrick Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, who points out that the photos purportedly leaked on Thursday in Australia were not new and in fact "have been online for awhile now." He said they were carried by Wired magazine in February 2008. Here is a link to that article. "To my knowledge, there has been no release of new detainee photos," Ryder says. "These allegations that these are somehow new photos that were leaked is incorrect."
Perhaps Obama has surrounded himself with little Trotskies and Guevaras who can’t suppress their revolutionary zeal ... or perhaps Obama intentionally leaked them. You can’t take Obama at his word either way.
lol! I bet you’re right!
This is perfect for Obama, it will instigate violence against American interests. What he really wants is a 911 style attack on America, he will say it was caused by the abuses of the previous administration. The 911 style attack will be his “Reichstag fire”, an excuse to institute emergency powers and use those new powers to attack the right rather than go after terrorists. These people have already calculated that whatever terrorists do will be to their advantage to consolidate power. They are doing everything they can to instigate an attack from Muslim terrorists. Why? The answer is that they will use it as an excuse to perhaps suspend congress and amass more powers. Bad times in America. There will be no 2010 elections, it woill be too late by then.
