The US House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, has accused the Bush-era CIA of misleading her about alleged torture of suspected terrorists and denied her failure to object to such tactics made her complicit.
"At every step of the way, the administration was misleading the Congress. And that is the issue. And that is why we need a 'truth commission,'" to look into controversial "war on terror" tactics, said the top Democrat.
Ms Pelosi, a key ally of President Barack Obama, has drawn fierce Republican charges that she knew years ago about harsh techniques such as the controlled drowning known as waterboarding that she now denounces as torture.
Republicans have fought efforts to name a blue-ribbon commission to look into who authorised what and when, while warning that any formal investigation will tar Democratic leaders who did not forcefully object to the tactics.
"This is a tactic, a diversionary tactic to take the spotlight off of those who conceived, developed and implemented these policies, which all of us long opposed," she said of the Republican approach.
Asked whether she was accusing the Central Intelligence Agency of lying to top lawmakers, Ms Pelosi replied: "Yes, misleading the Congress of the United States – misleading the Congress of the United States. I am."
The California Democrat echoed calls from Republicans who say the CIA should release the full details of briefings for politician on the harsh interrogations so that the US public could judge who knew what, and when.

We need a truth commission for Congress, if they prosecute those lawyers I want to see every single congressman and their aides go up on charges also. Every single person who knew about it, we'll have more Dems going to prison than anyone else. These witch hunts have to end. They'll be in the middle of their circus and we'll probably have another terror attack. It won't be W's fault then.

A pox on both their houses. The CIA bureaucracy actively worked to undermine the Bush administration to serve its own interests after they completely blew the 9/11 threat and WMDs in Iraq.
Even Democrats are shying away from Pelosi. She has the smell of dead meat.
Ms. Pelosi is in fact a very old women with progressive dementia. Her surgically modified mug confuses all who deal a genuinely tired out senile hag .
She should have kept her mouth shut, this story would have blown away with the next big news item.
If she leaves too soon I hope it doesn’t help the dems in 2010.
A co-worker of mine commented that it looks like the RATS are throwing her under the bus. My comment was: “No, she is throwing herself under the bus”. If you’re telling the truth, you don’t need to read what you said off a piece of paper.
I look for the c.i.a. to take Mrs. Pelosi and put her through the slow leak grinder.
Course I’d like to see a c.i.a. operative or hell even a deranged citizen put her in a commercial chipper shredder.

How could the Democrats have elevated someone who rates so lowly on the mendacity quotient?
Pelosi says she learned of waterboarding in 2003:
George J. Tenet 1997–2004 director of CIA.
Tenet was appointed by President Clinton and approved by Congress. Tenet became the CIA director in August of 1997.
So, Pelosi is now saying that George Tenet lied to her and ordered his congressional briefers to lie to Nancy.
