SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Republicans seeking a path out of the political wilderness are eyeing Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, a Mormon who's nudged the conservative stronghold in a more moderate direction on the environment and gay rights and drawn praise from President Barack Obama's campaign manager.
The popular, 49-year-old Huntsman has spoken publicly of the need to open the Republican Party to a wider range of viewpoints if it is to attract younger voters. He's won praise from party elders, including 2008 GOP presidential nominee John McCain, who called the governor a potentially promising contender in 2012.
Huntsman has earned the respect of Obama's 2008 campaign manager, David Plouffe, whose election operation helped bring millions of new voters into the Democratic Party.
Plouffe said Huntsman is a Republican who "seems to understand the party has to adjust - not stubbornly believe that everything is OK and it is the country that has to change."

He’s John McCain without the larger then life background and War Hero Status. With this guy at the top of a ticket we will be looking at Alabama and Texas being battleground states. Think 1964.
The only thing he would be good for would be to help soften a real Conservative Candidate’s image to the General Electorate and Indies as their Veep.

Then don’t vote for the moderate RINOS. Select a Conservative Candidate and push the CONSERVATIVE candiate in the primaries. STOP letting the RINOS run the GOP. Particpate in each district and take Conservative friends to the local GOP to change take control of the local GOP.
This has to be accomplished one district at a time. Complaining about this isn’t going to make the problem go away. Conservatives must Get Involved.

I live in Illinois' 18th district, I am active. We had Ray Lahood until the last election, then he didn't run. He chose instead to join zero's team as Transportation Secretary. Aaron Shock - R. was elected. I thought we had a conservative for sure this time, then he voted for the unconstitutional ex post facto bill to punish those businesses that got the bonuses. I'm giving him another chance before I write him off completely.
Try as I might, I don't run the Illinois GOP but I sure let those who do know what I think. I fault the Illinois party for giving us the abomination some call POTUS. They refused to back Peter Fitzgerald for the Senate and we got zero instead.
If that hadn't happened he would still be a relatively unknown state senator.
And we should declare that Hitler and Stalin are the philosophical progenitors of the democrat party and praise them. All democrat campaign posters should have either the swastika or hammer and sickle stamp in the corner.
Conservatives are NOT “IN” this “mess”....we ARE observing it and trying to counter it. Don’t buy into the headlines....politics is ALWAYS a “mess.”
