A group of travellers wrecked a multi-million pound police helicopter...
...after they leapt over a 4ft wall surrounding Surrey Police force’s helipad...
After threatening staff working in the operations room, they set about wrecking the helicopter, smashing six of its windows and causing tens of thousands of pounds worth of damage.

The incident happened at 10pm yesterday after weeks of aerial surveillance on the travellers’ site, where detectives believe stolen goods have been hidden.
Officers were getting ready to raid the site after collecting evidence they had filmed from the air. A police source said last night: '...no one expected this level of violence...'
The helicopter...is expected to be out of action for another two weeks while repairs are made....

Had them in my home town here in CT, same last name. We always called them gypsies.

Actually, the razzle dazzle of the store staff is amateur hour stuff.
The scams I mentioned are their bread and butter.Far more lucrative use of their time.
They do their “work” and vanish—that is their M.O. They don;t want to be caught. Then the fun stops for them.
Yeah, the Cook Islanders and the Maoris have an equivalent of the Travelers ~ they are called “white people”.

The language of the Travellers is Shelta (also called Gammon), a Celtic language derived from Irish, with many of the differences having originated as deliberate transpositions or insertions to render the speech difficult for Irish speakers to understand. There are a few bits and pieces of the Romany language that have crept in, but very little, and they were late additions to the Shelta language.

Their origins are murky, and probably quite a bit older than what your post suggests, though the enclosure issue certainly would have boosted their numbers, as people who might otherwise have left the group didn’t have any more attractive options outside of it.

As you’ve traveled to New Zealand you’d certainly be aware of the Maori/Cook Island/Samoan/Tongan gangs, which are something of a cross between gypsies and the Hell’s Angels. I think they’d be a fairly accurate approximation of the Gypsies.

They’re OK. I’m not anti-gang. They tend to keep to themselves, they tend to be anti-authority, and while they can be extremely violent it is usually between themselves. I have met a few in my time, and while I don’t move in their circles I found nothing particularly objectionable about them. They are different but no worse company than, say, the local Cosmopolitan Club.
One group in particular are quite interesting: they are a gang that roar about on motorcycles and do all of the typical gang stuff and get into the usual gang shenanigans. And they are all devout Christians. Go figure.

From what I've read, they play the odds. Most of their marks won't bother to make a legal issue of substandard work. If someone does, and there's danger of conviction, they simply return the money paid for the work. That kills the legal action.

I take it you’re in favor of police surveillance by helicopter, roaring around anytime it likes at low altitude, photographing everything and everyone, “fishing” for a reason for the cops to raid and kick in doors. Probably wouldn’t mind it happening in your neighborhood, ay. Wouldn’t wake up your kids at nite, wouldn’t affect your quality of life, wouldn’t bother you in the slightest.

I think they are practically everywhere.
We just don't notice them because they are not as "tribal" as in Europe.
Every now and then I read news stories of roving criminals stealing, short-changing, shop-lifting, etc.

They were abating a public nuisance in the only way they could. City Hall does that every weekend when it confiscates and destroys stereos that are played too loud. Or would you like the Police to roar around your neighborhood at low altitude in a noisy helicopter anytime they pleased, just in case one of your neighbors had committed an unspecified crime?

As a taxpayer I’d be furious. At the Police. They bought an expensive toy needlessly for the purposes of harassing the Gypsies and helping with traffic fines. They need their budgets cut back severely, and they need their helicopter put on e-Bay, Sarah-Palin-style. They don’t need it, and they’ve misused it.

If the police did that to you, on that flimsy rationale, you would sue them for millions.
Gypsies have the same rights to privacy and peaceful enjoyment as you or me or anyone else.

That’s a documented historical fact, and we are paying for that theft even today.
Travelers is the name used for those here in America, of Irish descent, that move around preying on people, doing shoddy home repairs and ripping people off in many ways.
