So-called "assault weapons" are exactly what the citizens should have, and they should know how to use them. I suppose that a heavily armed populace is a threat to the fascists that make up the left, and it should be. When the government fears the people, you have liberty. When the people fear the government, you have tyranny. The left wants the latter; we want the former.
Trying to keep guns out of the hands of law abinding Americans to reduce crime is like stopping sober people from buying cars to reduce drunk driving.
