The financial health of the government's two biggest benefit programs may have slipped over the past year, reflecting the deep recession that has already bitten into other areas of the budget.

The trustees for Social Security and Medicare are scheduled to provide their annual report on the finances of both programs on Tuesday. In advance of the release, many private analysts said they expected both programs could run out of cash sooner than last predicted.

Pretty soon they'll have to dip into the Lockbox, aka the piggy bank the government took the money out of long ago and left a stack of "I owe Me" notes.

Good Morning,
Even considering the fiction that is the Social Security Trust Fund I don't think either program will make it to 2020 before tearing through any possible reserves and then they become pay as you go. I believe you will see lowered benefits and taxes will have to go up to repay the bonds Social Security bought and also to pay for the program once those bond receipts have been spent. I predict 20-25% payroll taxes, plus at the minimum income tax rates back to what they were until the Clintons, and both means testing and the ceiling will go much higher or go away. It is going to be a very interesting time the next 12-20 years. Retirement as we know may be coming to an end.

Sorry for the doom and gloom, my opinion hope I'm wrong.

aBOUT THE HEADLINE: WE ALREADY KNOW THE SOCIAL SECURITY AND MEDICARE SYSTEMS ARE RIFE WITH WASTE FRAUD AND ABUSE. WE ALREADY KNOW THAT THESE GOVERNMENT PROVIDED SERVICES ARE NEAR BANKRUPTCY IF THEY AREN’T ALREADY. WHY DOES THE GOVERNMENT EVEN BOTHER KEEPING THE REAL TRUTH AND FACTS FROM ALL AMERICANS WHEN AMERICANS ALREADY KNOW THE FACTS AND THE TRUTH.

if it were not for the god damn government taking my savings, I would have a nice nest egg all set, but no, I had to pay outragous SS taxes every year. mean while more illegals get to recieve benifits, even folks that never paid into it get money from it. I see the retirement age rising and the benifits dropping, yet I am told to pay more.

to hell with the government. no different that a ponzi scheme, we all have been had, $100,000’s stolen from each worker. when do we lynch the bastards, and burn down washington??? as far as I am concerned, they all deserve death for this illegal rip off.

Has anyone seen the stupid, outrageous commercial put out by Mike Farrell (liberal from MASH) on how we should ALL be included in Medicare? Only complete Obama cool-aid drinkers won’t see that they are backing a sinking ship and want us all on board!!! DISGUSTING!

Liberals are stupid.
You can explain to them over and over concepts like “actuarially unsound” but they just stick their fingers in their ears and go NA NA NA NA NA NA NA.

So, Bring it!

Mike Farrell is stupid and outrageous.

As soon as ANYONE can point me to a country or nation where Ponzi schemes are working outrageously well, I’ll continue see truth staring me in the face.

The truth? That the sum of our current government’s prime directive is outright theft.

Capitalism has raised the standard of living for billions of people and is being tossed in the trash.

One of the more effective current Atlas techniques I have friends doing is when laid off exhaust Unemployment benefits. One is teaching himself to write iPhone applications, one is working on a startup PR firm, one is happily enjoying stay-at-home mom status.

All are crossing every t and dotting every i to get full 72 weeks of unemployment (all three were continuously employed for more than 10 years at a single company prior to layoff).

This is a HUGE double bad. Joe Workaholic goes from a net feeder of the system: kicking in thousands in unemployment premiums to a net recipient.

In Atlas Shrugged the virtuous just LEFT and went to a place where they were not disturbed. Unfortunatly Galt’s Gulch doesn’t exist.

While normally I wouldn’t approve of leaching at this point it’s hard not to feel that it is one of the most effective ways to cause massive pain to the statists: act like their constituents.

Yeah...

Taking money that would otherwise go to the kool aid crowd, looting the looters.

I like it!

The quicker we show people that the system doesn’t work, the faster we will ditch it and convince another generation that socialism sucks until you die. It doesn’t even quit then as they confiscate any leftover accumulated wealth.

Peripherally related:

You knew that postage rates went up today (or a couple of days ago, not sure exactly when.) ?? Well, I was out of stamps anyway, so I tried to buy a roll of the new stamps this afternoon.

The Post Office clerk said;
" Sorry, we don't have any rolls of the new stamps".
"OK, let me have a hundred sheet stamps."
"Sorry we don't have any sheets of the new stamps either. Probably get some in a week."
"Well, let me have whatever combination of stamps to mail one regular letter."
"Sorry, we don't have any of the right combination of stamps to mail one regular letter. I can sell you an old 42 cent stamp and a postcard stamp; that will be more than enough to send it, but what we are mostly doing is just running everything through with the meter printed stamps."

Yeah, I really want this government in charge of Healthcare.

I can just see it now:
In the emergency room:
Hi, I just cut through an artery. Can I get some stitches?
Sorry, we don't have any suture materials.
Can I get a heavy bandage and some tape?
Sorry, we don't have any bandages, and all we have is scotch tape at the 47 administrators desks.
Can I get a bandaid?
Sorry, we have used up our monthly allotment of bandaids, and the administrators won't allow us to open the supply closet again until the first day of the next month . What we are mostly doing is giving everyone a kleenex and a cough drop and telling them to come back next month.

. I believe you will see lowered benefits and taxes will have to go up

I think you're right. But I'd like to see a fight. Maybe we can at least salvage something out of this. We should demand any SS cuts be tied to cuts in public pensions.

1)Public sector pensions are already bleeding us dry. Every time it's revealed, public workers INSIST that, once promised, benefits CANNOT be taken away.

2)They get platinum benefits whereas we'll be lucky to get the pittance we've already been promised.

3)And they retire in their 40's and 50's.

So here's what I propose: Demand that politicians CUT public pensions---drastically--- BEFORE cutting our benefits. Cut the pension amount. No pension before age 66. Increase their contribution rate. Remove overtime from their pension calculation (base pay only). Stop basing pension on the last three years...use average earnings over their working life.

That's a start. Screw their contracts. If the state constitution has to be amended to "allow" the cuts, so be it. If the pols are going to fool with our SS and Medicare, then our Privileged Public Servant Class must get cut first!

Oh, and if the public workers don't agree, then Obama should simply "appropriate" the money in their pension funds...after all, they do HAVE money in THEIR pension funds. Move all that money to SS and let them reap the same stingy benefits we get. Obama's good at that kind of thing.
