Government to condemn land for Flight 93 memorial

PITTSBURGH – The government will begin taking land from seven property owners so that the Flight 93 memorial can be built in time for the 10th anniversary of the 2001 terrorist attacks, the National Park Service said.

In a a statement obtained by The Associated Press, the park service said it had teamed up with a group representing the victims' families to work with landowners since before 2005 to acquire the land.

"But with few exceptions, these negotiations have been unsuccessful," said the statement, which was to be released later Thursday.

The seven property owners own about 500 acres still needed for what will ultimately be a $58 million, 2,200-acre permanent memorial and national park at the crash site near Shanksville, about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"We always prefer to get that land from a willing seller. And sometimes you can just not come to an agreement on certain things," park service spokesman Phil Sheridan said.

2200 acres for what? A crescent shaped memorial facing Mecca?

Somebody explain to me why the government and National Parks Service think they need 2,200 acres for a memorial like this???

I’m all for a memorial site, but 2,200 acres is a bit much...

Those people that actually live around that tragic site should be left alone...

"We always prefer to get that land from a willing seller. And sometimes you can just not come to an agreement on certain things,"

And then you put your jackboot on their throats, stick an MP-5 in their mouth, and steal it from them.

To HELL with the NPS, and this damnable "memorial" to tyranny.

If I were these property owners I would salt the soil, and put SO many chemicals in the ground that this site would become an EPA Superfund site.

Citizens fought terrorists trying to impose their will on America. And in return the landowners must submit to government tyranny in violation of the Fifth Amendment to take away their lawfully owned property.

And nearly FOUR square miles - 2 miles by 2 miles? This is outrageous.

So we take it from them, and imprison or kill them if they resist.

*So we'll just have to go in by force and hijack it.*

There something ironic about the American government using forcible confiscation to honor the memory of people who died fighting against that sort of thing.

2,200-acre permanent memorial and national park at the crash site...

Seriously, do "we" have to steal the land just because "we" want a park at the crash site?

Muslim shrines for the greater good. Isn't the design oriented toward Mecca?

This may sound uncaring, but why do we as a nation feel obligated to build a memorial everytime someone dies? We have become a nation of group mourners.

If you condemn land that was previously perfectly good, and gently used...And turn around and “use” (that is such a loose term) it for a memorial...

Again, 2,200 acres is a bit much to condemn...

And since they already have 80% of what they initially wanted to grab away from the citizens...That remaining 20% is going to be used how???
