With little fanfare, the Government Accountability Office released a document last week that points to the day when the American dream dies and is buried beneath a middle-class welfare state.
You can see death coming for the American dream as surely as you can see cirrhosis coming for a drunk.
We are bringing it upon ourselvesalthough not all Americans deserve what is going to happen. For one, our children dont deserve it. For another, Americans who have tried to live independent, self-reliant lives dont deserve it, either.
But they are going to be dragged down with everyone else, if we dont make dramatic changes in public policies soon.
What the document said is that what the GAO dryly calls the federal fiscal gap may now equal as much as $62.9 trillion.
That gap, says the GAO, is the amount that federal spending must be cut or federal taxes increased to pay the benefits of Medicare, Social Security and other federal entitlement programs that have been promised to people over the next 75 years.
The $62.7 trillion gap was calculated by assuming that the spending programs in President Obamas stimulus are only temporary, that other discretionary spending programs will grow only at the rate the economy grows and that the lower income-tax rates set by President Bushs tax cuts earlier this decade are allowed to continue for one more decade even though they are now scheduled to expire next year.

I think the exact date will end up being Nov. 4, 2008, which incidently I believe was made a holiday in Kenya.
Here’s the GAO pdf:

“The $62.7 trillion gap was calculated ... and that the lower income-tax rates set by President Bushs tax cuts earlier this decade are allowed to continue for one more decade even though they are now scheduled to expire next year.”
and...
“Under another scenario, (a $33.7 trillion gap) GAO assumed that discretionary federal spending would be frozen at the rate of inflation for the next 10 years and then allowed to grow with the economy and that the current lower income-tax rates would not be extended after next year...”
... will be the justification of doing away with the Bush tax cuts. Except that - as it is will all non-supply siders, they don’t understand that retaining the cuts will increase revenues to where the gap wouldn’t be as great in the first scenario and much larger in the second scenario and the idea that ‘spending will be a frozen rate of inflation’ (what? frozen at 30% a year or more??) esp. with doing away with the tax cuts, in the face of the largest (by far) increase in the money supply ever! is just simply ... well, liberal utopian fantasy.
The federal government has just expropriated Chrysler, and made a gift of it to the UAW. This is banana republic stuff.
I certainly am not going to buy anything from a union-owned company! Especially not one that the union STOLE.
Ditto what u said FRiend.
We really are a banana republic now :-(
CHANGE YOU CAN BELIEVE IN!!

Yep - the dream ended already. This country is finished. It is a banana republic now.

We have been a banana republic since the 2006 election cycle. Pelosi engaged ACORN and other corrupt election officials to make sure there was a democratic “revolution”. It will never turn around unless we force the government to have honest elections. Can you foresee this happening?
The "American" experiment is over. The outcome is clear. How it ends is known.
Pogo was right all along.
The American dream died with free trade/globalism and the loss of good manufacturing jobs which pushed millions of the middle class into the lower class...the dream died when Wall Street gambled away our money, bankrupting many of us with the help of the paid for politicians in both parties. The loss of jobs-permanent loss- is what is killing the dream. Tax cuts don’t much matter if you don’t have a job.
Think outside the box.
Teddy Roosevelt, Wilson, Hoover, FDR,.....
Karl Marx just didn’t think up these ideas by himself in the 1800s. They’ve been around a long time.
And we don't even grow bananas.
Ditto! That would be some real Hope and Change.
We had a great run... 232 years of freedom. I, too, believe the America as we knew it came to an end on 4 Nov. 2008.
Unfortunately, too many “Americans” have opted to bargain away God-given and Constitutionally guaranteed liberty, all to have a few grains of government rice dropped in their bowl. The Founders must be spinning at 1M RPM in their graves right now. I wonder how this is all going to shake out? Hopefully, if/when Texas does secede it’s ready to fight a two-front war: against DC who wants to keep it, and Mexico, who wants to claim it.
Democrat Liberals WANT the end of America to come. They WANT it to like a third world country.
