Maine Becomes Fifth US State to Approve Gay Marriage
Times of India ^ | 5/6/09

Posted on 05/06/2009 4:52:45 PM PDT by nickcarraway

The governor of Maine on Wednesday signed a law making the northeastern US state the fifth to allow gays to marry.

Governor John Baldacci, a Democrat, signed the law after the upper chamber in the state legislature voted 21 to 13 in favour.

"In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions," Baldacci said in a statement on his website.

"I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

Maine joined its fellow New England states of Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont, as well as Iowa, in extending marriage rights to couples of the same sex.

Last week New Hampshire, which is also in the northeast, moved closer to adopting a similar law.

The bill passed in the upper house, but as still to win clearance from the lower house and get the signature of Governor John Lynch, a Democrat who has previously opposed moving beyond allowing civil unions.

New York's legislature is currently considering a bill proposed by Governor David Paterson.

..a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

Of course not --- because a union of two men is not equal to a union of a man and a woman.

Not that logic matters when you're dealing with the left.

Just don’t cave in, folks. It doesn’t matter how many laws they pass as long as we cling tightly to what we were taught by God. We will have to suffer for our beliefs sooner or later, of course, but that comes with being a Christian. All we can do now is love those who have been seduced by the false doctrines of the Revolution and steel ourselves for the test to come.

God bless our beloved Freeperette SheLion (RIP), who has been spared the sight of this depraved Baldacci abomination.

It’s not enough that Baldacci has run business and jobs out of the state - he wants normal families to flee as well. Liberalism is nothing but a scorched-earth policy. No wonder they all make a show of going “green”.

And everybody said that a constitutional amendment wasn’t necessary and that DOMA was sufficient enough and also should be left to the individual states.

This slippery slope is lubed with Vaseline.

We have been through this before. We have voted against this type of issue twice through the ballot box and now we will be bringing it to a people’s vote. Once again I will be collecting signatures.

This rash of states approving same-sex marriage makes it increasingly likely that the US is hit with another terrorist attack launched by Islamic fundamentalists in the near future. Homosexuality is (quite properly) considered an abomination in Islam*; this gives Muslim radicals one more big reason to hate the United States and try to destroy it.
* theoretically, homosexuality (via Leviticus) is also an abomination in Judaism and Christianity; sadly these faiths seem to have tossed Leviticus out the window.
