Barack Obama's Notre Dame visit provokes huge Catholic backlash, PR disaster
Daily Telegraph (London) ^ | May 5, 2009 | Gerald Warner

Barack Obama's ill-fated decision to speak at the commencement ceremony of the Catholic University of Notre Dame on May 17 and to accept an honorary degree, despite his aggressively pro-abortion activities, has turned into a nasty car-crash for the White House. The Catholic and broader Christian backlash against this outrage has built up a head of steam beyond anything the cack-handed university administration could have anticipated.

Last week the first 300,000 signatures on a petition opposing the invitation to Obama were delivered to Notre Dame. This section of the petition was sent in advance so that it could be seen by the members of the Boards of Fellows and Trustees at their meeting last Friday. But, with signatures coming in at an average of 8,800 per day, there will be many more to follow.

Every spin doctor knows the most dangerous ploy is to attempt to present a hostile community as friendly by suborning a minority element of it. In this instance the Vichy Catholics selling the pass to the anti-life forces have been swamped by genuine Catholics. The university's defiance of the US Bishops' Conference resolution on awards to pro-abortionists has forced the American bishops to denounce Obama publicly. The cracks that were disgracefully papered over by "liberal" Catholics during the presidential election have been split wide open.

Thanks to Jenkins and his fellow collaborators, Barack Obama is now on a direct collision course with the Catholic community and that confrontation will now endure for the remainder of his presidency and influence the next election. Who said Catholic lefties were useless?

Yet most Catholics, notably Hispanics, voted for B. Hussein. Of course, he was running against a sure loser.

Let the protests begin....If I lived within 100 miles of South Bend I would be there thrwing eggs at Emporor Zero.
Of course Pravda and state radio will ignore the intense protests and offer no coverage.... Zero needs to get blasted by protests..

The genuine Catholics among the graduates ought to march on the university president’s office and tell him they will boycott the ceremony if BO is honored there.
It’s too much to expect that there are genuine Catholics among the faculty who would show that kind of courage, particularly when their paychecks are involved.
A list of the Board of Regents should be published so these extremely silent individuals would have to answer for the president they have chosen to lead the university. They should be accountable.

Obama's lackeys in the state run (through TARP) media will be there ~ e.g. NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, etc.

There are certainly enough eggs in this world to make sure they join in the festivities (assuming, of course, that eggs are fundamentally harmless, albeit sticky).

They'll cover that. The question is will the "newsies" cover things as well when the Obamistas begin sending advance goon squads out to public gatherings to shoot troublemakers.

Or, in this case, stupidly trying to suborn the MAJORITY.

Not boycott - because their seats would be filled in with adoring fans posing as grads..... I hope they all stand and turn their backs to him as he speaks - that would be a huge distraction to the TOTUS reader and show their disrespect to the entire situation....if they don’t show it won’t be noticed.

It’s a shame that students are put in a position of either standing on their religious principles or attending their own graduation.

Wonder if there are plans afoot to have a separate graduation ceremony.

I’m still expecting that Obama will pull out of the event to save face - family commitments or manufactured foreign crisis. It would be very embarrassing to go there and have a very sparse audience, but if that were probable, they could bus in a bunch of stand in students from Chicago to sit in the audience.

This is a damn shame. Can you imagine the feelings of the Graduates? This is supposed to be a happy time; a time for celebration not a controversial political event. This is all about politics. If I were among the Notre Dame graduating class I would tell them to send my diploma in the mail.

“family commitments or manufactured foreign crisis.”

Pray to God he doesn’t ‘manufacture a foreign crisis’ - maybe he could just say he had a prior committment to do a 747 photo op.

“Of course Pravda and state radio will ignore the intense protests”

Yep, I was in South Bend a couple of weeks ago and the MSM when talking about the protest said it involved not many students and a “few” Bishops.

I’ll bet most Catholics have no idea what’s going on.
