One of the thorniest issues on the American political scene came to the Midwest this week, and it arrived in typical Midwestern fashion.
No one seemed to fuss too much about it.
When Iowa clerks began issuing same-sex marriage licenses Monday, they were not greeted with long lines or large protests. And despite the historic nature of Iowa being the first Midwestern state to approve same-sex marriage, Minnesota gay and lesbian couples are not rushing across the border to get hitched.
Instead, they are waiting -- perhaps patiently, perhaps stubbornly -- for gay marriage to happen here....
There is precedent for court decisions to influence public opinion.
In 1948, the California Supreme Court struck down a law banning interracial marriage, a case frequently cited in legal battles over gay marriage. At the time, more than 90 percent of Americans opposed interracial marriage.
By the time the U.S. Supreme Court struck down similar prohibitions in 1967, the majority of Americans still opposed it, but the numbers had shifted dramatically. Today, the number of Americans opposed to interracial marriage is a marginalized minority.
Advocates see similar trends with gay marriage and believe that what happens in Iowa won't stay in Iowa.
"I think there will be an impact on public opinion throughout the Midwest," Uebelhor said.

This mess is going to open the biggest can of worms imaginable. Only attorneys will benefit.
Now I have things to do -— I am going to San Francisco to marry my dog....
I am not surprised. A new type of dangerous, pushy minority has now evolved: GAY SUPREMACISTS!
If they wait long enought they won’t have the added cost of the divorce.
The comparison to interracial marriage is the biggest crock I’ve seen in a while.
Except for affirmative action, of course, the law does not recognize differences in race.
But the law DOES recognize - at least it does up to today - that there are innate differences in men and women. They are equal under the law, but nit identical. They are a matched set!
If same-sex marriage is like interracial marriage, then are single-sex bathrooms, locker rooms, barracks, etc. to be struck down as illegal “segregation?”
Maybe I shouldn’t give the left any ideas. But it’s funny how they always accuse the right of “ignoring science.”
Do these fools think that saying they are married that they won’t still be revolting..I think not they are as ugly and filthy as ever..You will never be married in the eyes of God you fools...Get a clue
Because by the time MN allows it, most of these fellows will have new “husbands” anyway.
The muzzies in Minnesota won’t like this very much....I’m sure stuart smally will be in favor...
And that's the only thing that would put the brakes on this. What the rest of us of think is of no importance.
The “kill the babies, but don’t let gays get married” mentality is stunning. South Dakota, for example, will probably never allow gay marriage. Yet, voters there rejected a law that would prevent abortion except in the cases of rape, incest and life of the mother. And thats one of the most conservative states of all!!!
I’m not saying I’m for gay marriage, but this “sky is falling” attitude is shocking considering most of the same people have no problem with sucking out pre-born kids from the womb.
If the parts don't fit you ought to quit!!
So much for their talking points that the public’s attitude towards gay “marriage” is changing.Put it on the ballot in Massachusetts then, gays,if you’re that confident!
So...if the homosexuals are allowed to marry, doesn’t that let polygamy into the dance also? If Neil and Bob want a springtime wedding at the lake, why can’t a man have four wives? Not for me, one is more than plenty.
I never heard that before! Good one.
Homosexuals don’t “rush”, they prance.
Should we consider asking our churches to redefine our vows (Covenant)if the continuation of same-sex marriage continues to take over our country?
I do not want to be in a union, which defiles my God!
Should we start having Covenant Ceremonies? Just wondering.
IF MARRIAGE IS TAKEN OVER BY OUR JUDGES...I DONT WANT ANY PART OF IT. IT IS A COVENANT BEFORE GOD.
