Maybe worse than the first Camaro wreck is the first Chevy Camaro breakdown. This "p**sy magnet" Bumblebee-yellow Camaro lost all electrical power and coasted to a stop with a scant 40 miles on the odometer.
The ecstatic new owner, a forum fan-girl by the name of BUMLB, was crushed when the car conked-out cruising through a parking lot at a leisurely 5 MPH, completely losing all electrical power, locking the gear selector and the key in the ignition. A flatbed towed the disabled car to a dealer where diagnosis found the cable running from the trunk mounted battery had frayed on the starter motor and grounded out, causing complete loss of power. A new cable running a different route will be installed at the dealer. Hopefully this isn't something we'll be seeing more of on other cars. [Camaro5]
It was probably assembled on a Monday or Friday...Or any other day for that matter...GM/UAW crap.
This is what I had - NOT ugly!!! ;^)
[One fault I recall is that the 67s tended to rust around the rear window chrome strip and eventually water would start leaking through causing a flood in the trunk on rainy days . You have this problem ?]
Worse, mines a convertible and I lived in Seattle for a while.
Now I’m in Vegas and I’m slowly taking care of all the problem spots (permanently). That’s what’s taking so long. Also, I drove it till it dropped, so now my baby is getting the care she deserves:)
Yup, that’s the model. Badly designed cables, glued on brake weights, cracking nose and all.
Yes, that’s right, people are already having the noses crack on the Camaros. Without hitting anything.
“It will be a resto-mod in the sense that it wont be stock but Im not doing anything super radical to it. Im doing things like replacing the body bolts with stainless steel, making sure everything is coated to prevent rust, well built 350 and a turbo-hydro 400. You really have to do the brake upgrade to disc.”
There’s room for enjoy a car for what it is, and what how it was built. But, in this case, Spktyr’s point is valid then, your car was more of a straight line car.
Real car guys appreciate each car for it’s strengths, rather than compare it to a new ZR1 Corvette, or Saleen.
I have an 87 Corvette, I love it. And I hate what’s happened to GM.
That is unfortunate. I guess it isn’t our daddy’s camaro.
I don’t know about your daddy, but my father’s Camaro was about as badly built, per him.
Fifth.
“I dont know about your daddy, but my fathers Camaro was about as badly built, per him.”
I had a 72 Camaro, it was a fine automobile. No trouble at all.
Good point. My ‘81 wasn’t built that great.
Dad’s was a 70. It threw a rod five blocks from the dealership.
He returned the Camaro and bought a Cuda instead.
Then there were more solidly built Camaros, too.
Yeah, but they didn’t roll out of the factory that way - the owners had to *re*build them.
:P
“Dads was a 70. It threw a rod five blocks from the dealership.”
Sorry about his luck. We can trade anecdote for anecdote. I’m no fan of what GM has become, but in the late 60s to early 70s, GMs were as good as if not better than Mopars or Fords.
Nor did mine. My 69 Dart slant six was solid as well. I think that the late sixties were peak years for reliable Detroit machinery.
Well, he tried to get another Camaro, but every single one on the lot (all new at the time) had something wrong with them.
He also later tried what at the time was the best selling car in the US, the Oldsmobile Cutlass. Pile of junk.
Then a Buick Regal. Pile of junk.
The problem wasn’t that the GMs weren’t as good as the Mopars or Fords... its that *all* of them had terrible quality. If they didn’t have that, the Japanese imports would not have been able to get a foothold starting in 1969 with the Datsun/Nissan 510 and the 240Z.
