English lawns will become a sign of "social and moral decadence" in the next decade as climate change makes it increasingly difficult to maintain traditional gardens, horticulturalists have warned.
Professor Geoff Dixon of the University of Reading's Centre for Horticulture and Landscape said temperature rise, droughts and increasing risk of pest and disease over the next century will transform gardens in Britain.
In the south of the country it will become difficult to maintain the traditional English garden of rambling roses, lupins and delphiniums by the end of the century. Instead gardeners will have to plant more Mediterranean species such as citrus fruit, rock rose and even palm trees. In the north of the country more soft fruits will be grown.
In the short term, water shortages in the next 12 years will make it difficult to have a lawn.
Like in Australia during recent droughts, Prof Dixon said watering a lawn will be seen as an extravagance only experienced by the rich.
"Lush, well-watered, English 18th and 19th Century parklands will suffer. Retaining their rural Arcadian charm requires reversion to wild flower meadows managed with traditional hay-cuts without mowing until early September," he said. "Clinging to the grassy elegance of English lawns will be signals of social and moral decadence."
The Environment Agency predicts most households will have a water meter in areas of "water stress" like the South East by 2015 and the whole country will have the device installed by 2035.
Prof Dixon said it will have a significant impact on gardening.
He said: "Whilst water is not rationed at the moment, it is going to rationed by price so if you wish to continue to continue to have a lawn like Wimbledon before they play tennis on it, you will have to pay a lot of

They’d better not water them either. Water vapor is a powerful greenhouse gas. /sarc

Doddering old fool.
Oh me oh my, in ninety years I’ll be six feet under and this old bastard will have been there twenty years longer than I have.
I’ll let the people in 2100 worry about it.
Can’t wait to see if Bammie and Shelly change the White House lawn to “southwest desert landscaping” with fake cactuses, fake coyotes wearing scarfs, fake illegal aliens hiding behind rocks and **** like that.
My “yard” is whatever can grow in one-hslf inch of dirt on top of Central Texas limestone.
If it’s green and it comes up in the spring, it has my blessing and support.
I mow maybe 4 or 5 times a year.
I’m comfortable with all that, but I NEVER thought I’d be “stylin”.
I amd SO SICK of hearing this BS!
Fine by me. I dislike mowing.
Rationing energy, rationing water, rationing life...seems like a prelude to just aborting life en masse. [If you’ve seen any of the “Earth After People” shows on television, you’ll know what I mean.]
In reality, we’ll all be tilling up our lawns to grow food for our new Overlords...if, in fact, we’re allowed to even OWN land in the future...
*SIGH*
I just finished cutting my yard, and I left one side uncut because of the buttercups coming to bloom and the needs of local bee populations. Don’t green me, bro!
Here’s an idea:
Plant vineyards. They grew quite well in England the last time that the climate got warm. Stupid alarmists.
Down, putative serf!
:)
Well, that’s easy enough to fix. Just park some old cars where the flowers used to be and let ‘em rust. Maybe some trailers too.
Excellent. Pave them over and paint them green. Nothing like a nice “Heat Sink” around the house.
If I’m an immoral person for having a lawn, what must the people that own golf courses be?
...seems like a prelude to just aborting life en masse.
Now you get the picture. Remember what the greenies really believe: Humanity is a virus infecting the Earth Mother Goddess Gaia (with the exception of Algore, Soros, etc)
"Just enough of me, way too much of you."
