Pro-lifers Put up Billboards on Indiana Toll Road Decrying Obama's Notre Dame Appearance

CHICAGO, May 1, 2009 (LifeSiteNews.com) - In response to the University of Notre Dame's invitation to President Barack Obama to deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary degree on May 17, the Pro-Life Action League has erected two large billboards located near the South Bend, Ind., campus.

The billboards, to go up May 4 on the Indiana Toll Road, Interstate 80/90, will read, "NOTRE DAME: Obama is pro abortion choice. How dare you honor him," along with a picture of a baby in utero sucking its thumb. They also will list a Web address, NotreDameProtest.com, where visitors can get information on the protests planned during the graduation weekend at Notre Dame.

"These billboards will be seen by hundreds of thousands of motorists, including most of the families coming to Notre Dame for the graduation exercises," said Eric Scheidler, the League's communications director. "They will help make the direct and irrefutable connection between Barack Obama and abortion."

The League and its national director Joe Scheidler, a Notre Dame alumnus and former teacher there, already have called on the university's president, Rev. John Jenkins, to rescind his invitation to Obama. They have protested at the university, and have said they will return to decry Obama's appearance on May 17 if Jenkins' invite stands. Nearly 60 Catholic bishops and scores of pro-life leaders have written Jenkins, urging him to cancel Obama's talk, or otherwise protested his decision.

"As scandalous as the Obama invitation is, it presents us with a welcome opportunity to highlight Barack Obama's pro-abortion record--something which was largely concealed by the Obama campaign and the media during last year's campaign," Scheidler said. "Obama's extreme pro-abortion agenda is out of step with the majority of Americans, and that news is finally getting out, thanks to this controversy."

One of the League's billboards will be located on Interstate 80/90 east, half a mile east of the Elkhart exit No. 92, about 15 miles east of the Notre Dame exit, and the other on Interstate 80/90 west near Rolling Prairie, about 25 miles west of the Notre Dame exit. The League has rented the two billboards for 30 days each, so they will be in place for two weeks leading up to the Notre Dame commencement, as well as two weeks afterward.

The Michigan-based pro-life group, Citizens for a Pro-Life Society, also contributed to the cost of the billboards.

The Notre Dame sellout could be a blessing in disguise.

I am beginning to believe that. God has a way of turning things---using for good what was intended for evil.

He is indeed at the top; but there's Canon Law, which in this case you could say is (OK, imperfectly) analogical to a constitution, separation of powers and procedural due process. It's up to the Bishop; and even more, to the University Trustees. It's they that need to either see the light, or feel the heat.

I share your frustration. I share your strong wish that that somebody, somehere, should put a stop to this, stat.

But it is a little ironic that the Church administration gets criticized for being monarchical, and then gets criticized for NOT being monarchical; the pope gets derided in some quarters for claiming a limited infallibility, by people who nonethless expect him to be omnipotent.

Cardinal George, the head of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, urged concerned Catholics "to do what you are supposed to be doing: to call, to email, to write letters, to express what's in your heart about this."

In all truth, I think that the laity have power here that bishops can only dream of.

Particularly significant is the donors' boycott.

As Catholic convert, layman, and blogger Mark Shea says, "If integrity does not drive allegedly Catholic schools to their knees in repentant shame, then perhaps waning contributions from disgusted alumni and supporters will. If Mammon is their god, then let it be their judge."

Ten miles up the road from my country home is Newberry College—a small institute supported by the Lutheren Church.

It is but one of hundreds of both small and large Christian Universities dedicated to not only higher learning but to Godly moral clarity that find themselves fighting tooth and claw to keep anti-Christ Leftist political agendas at bay.

If,for instance, they,or especially the most popular among them like Liberty and Oral Roberts had a backsliding Satan moment and not only invited a powerful evil advocate for preborn and postborn infant murder to not only speak but be honored at these hallowed locations, they would collapse in the fund vanishing born of the righteous umbrage of their REAL CHRISTIAN alumni.

But then Protestants apparently know Jesus better than Catholics—or at least that will be the general perception if the Obama abomination appears before and is blessed, what else could you call it,by Notre Dame.

Notre Dame may have become,at heart,a sans Christian institution, but Christianity will judge the now feckless pile of Liberal Lego bricks as the first surrender to perdition of the Church that started it all...

IF Obama appears.+++++++++++++++

>I can’t understand how the Pope is going along with this.<

I don’t think he should — this is an American political affair with Catholic undertones.

Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Northwestern, Southern Cal: they're all former Christian universities that are now secular schools: the USA is thick with them from coast to coast.

They above-named were all founded as Protestant seminaries, in fact, They all bit the dust, religiously speaking, long ago. That's not news.

But at Notre Dame, there's a fight. A FIGHT! That's what makes it news.

Somebody said, "When you sit down and think about it all, there's no hope. But when you struggle to your feet: there's hope."

Please pray for me and mine: I'll pray for you and yours.

“God has a way of turning things...”

That’s why we should continue to pray for a final identification of Obama and his elligibility, or the lack thereof, for POTUS.

I wonder what Obama’s reaction would be if ND asked him to show them his valid birth certificate before handing him his honorary degree. After all, ND should want to ascertain that it is given to the right recipient.

I guess everyone has noticed that all of a sudden obama has said FOCA, Freedom of choice act, is not one of his first priorites to sign? The voters he promised that too are none too happy with him. Butmaybe they are smaller numbers than he thought.

You watch him turn on signing that until Notre dame engagement is over or until the elections of 2010, 2012. obama just figured out he cannot hide his infanticidal/genocidal policies and he just figured out the large numbers Pro Lifers are. And it appears his wake up call was because of this Notre Dame engagemnet outrage. Keep it up!

Many years ago Boortz was overtaken by Hannity in Atlanta because of Neal’s misanthropic views of the rights of the pre-born versus the “rights” of women who screw around and then want instant post-sex birth control for any damn old reason.
Hannity went on to greatness and Boortz got stuck with a small,by comparison, audience with Jerry Springer prurient interests and the fleeting AM listeners tuning into his silly act when Rush is in commercial..

Boortz is probably the biggest reason Libertarians are viewed as marginal half-assed conservatives.
Cato wouldn’t want to be seen with the chrome-dome dork.

Boortz can be fun though—sad that his obvious radio talent is SO wasted on his obsessive compulsive enslavement to certain points of extreme stupidity.

Good Catholics fighting for the honor of the largest American University named after the Mother of Christ is all well and good...

But Protestants insulting the devout of the RCC for allowing such a profane desecration to occur can only help them add to their efforts.

Lutherens,Baptists,Methodists, etc would be appalled if such evil were honored at THEIR institutions—THAT is where the Catholics can take it to the Pope—unless the Big Bishop WANTS to look like a pathetic also-ran in the defense of Christendom..

Everyone in Count Obama's audience should hold up a small cross during his speech. Then he'll have a matter of only hours to fly back to the White House before the sun rises.
