Medical insurance is such a joke, anything would be improvement.
Insurance choice...You can usually opt in at work or opt out—and get it thru spouse or private pay. If your insurance is really bad, you can change jobs to get better insurance. Some people that I have known that have been eligible for VA insurance, have CHOSEN to go to private care for certain issues that they did not want their employer or VA to be aware of. That was their choice. With the NATIONALIZATION of medical records into a ‘SECURE’ NATIONAL DATA BASE, that may not be possible for this friend. A nationalized data base means that the government, the future provider of health care, will know your entire health history. Insurance companies don’t know that now...
I personally know of people who have worked rather menial jobs at, say, Starbucks (no offense intended to Starbucks employees), but I mean people with MS degrees making my caramel macchiatos-—why? Because Starbucks has traditionally offered good insurance to even part-time employees. So husband is starting new business or unemployed, and wife works for Starbucks.
When you say ANYTHING is better...I caution you, anything is not better. If it is better, then why do Canadians come south of the border in droves—I lived in North Dakota; this is not urban myth—it is fact; they would rather pay out of pocket here because they don’t have the option in Canada. If your health insurance won’t cover a procedure, do you really think that obamacare will? Highly doubt it. Oh it might at first, but not for long. We will all have to make due with less and pay more—always the way of governmental services. I won’t even get into the caliber of people that will stay in in the medical profession. Maybe career choice will become socialized like it is in China and USSR—your children and grandchildren will be directed into the career that the government feels is best for society...
Choice is the key. Lack of choice is why National Insurance or Single Payer Ins (whatever you call it) it ends up being worse everywhere it is tried.
The government has destroyed social security. Look at Medicaid and Medicare—they have ballooned over the years. Why would ANYone want to give the government more control over a fifth of our economy; the fifth that is actually profitable??! Health Care rationing is certainly not better imho. Neither is PC disease/health care rationing. So if you are old, you don’t get the treatment because you are not going to be around anyway....that is the true thinking on part of some—there was an article posted where the occupant said he would ration health care to elderly. Some things won’t be covered. This rationale can be used to exclude pretty much everyone... person weighs too much, person smoked or drank too much, person was in sun too much, person did not exercise enough, person exercised too much. Bodies, health and life are not perfect, but anyone can and will be able to be rationed for various procedures.
I am sure what will INITIALLY be sold to us will appear to be great—”fair” as defined by government...with options. However, like so many government programs, there will be a creep towards increasing costs (taxes) and fewer options.
Finally, socialized health care, along with all the other government spending that has occurred—esp. in last hundred days is going to cost TRILLIONS!!!! Why would anyone want to saddle future generations with any more debt???!! It is time our generation actually paid for ourselves. I can only speak for myself, but I am already having a hard time sleeping at night knowing that our generation is burdening our children and grandchildren.
Sign me atlas shrugged :(
