NEW ORLEANS - The fate of the University of New Orleans athletic program now rests with the State Legislature after a measure to increase fees to keep the program alive was defeated by a student vote.
The vote, over whether or not to increase the students athletic fee by about $100 per semester was defeated by a margin of 53 to 47 percent, the University said Friday.
The school said that the results of the student vote mean that the University of New Orleans will not ask the LSU Board of Supervisors to increase the student fee.
The only hope we have to preserve UNO Athletics as a Division I program is now in the hands of the Louisiana Legislature, said Chancellor Timothy P. Ryan. If the proposed budget cuts are not reduced through legislative action, the University will have no alternative but to eliminate the general fund support for Athletics. The UNO Division I Athletics program cannot survive without this revenue.
Katrina smashed UNO's athletic program from 15 sports to six, but it had rebounded to nine sports that feature 140 athletes, employing 35 staffers.
The proposed state budget cuts would trim $1.5 million from the athletics budget. Raising the fee students pay would have restored the lost funds.
"We've given the students the reasons why athletics is important to the university, and I feel confident from the feedback we get, said UNO Athletic Director Jim Miller, before the vote.

We need a countdown thread for the Globe closing...Will Punch pull the plug or not? Will he choke, cave to the unions???...IMHO, if he doesn’t follow through..he’ll be out in a few months..

While somewhat amusing, college athletics are certainly not important to educating people.
Bully jocks manage to find out how to reply in 3... 2... 1...
Check out savewrko.com. One quote there compares buying the Globe to “catching a falling knife”.
Glad to see this.
The thing has a negative net worth. It is no longer an asset, it is an expense.
I read that..but our abb does a far better job of keeping us up to date. He’s a treasure...best compiler ever on FR that I’ve seen..If he had a blog, I’d happily make a micropayment to read it..
If I got paid, it would be “work.” I’m retired. Not interesting in working any more.
But I may do it for ‘fun’ in the future, LOL!
FYI..AP just reported that the Globe unions have asked for an “extention” of the shut-down deadline..

Raising fees $100 a head from 140 athletes is not going to restore 1.5 million dollars. It's going to restore $14,000. Getting 1.5 million dollars at $100 a head would require 15,000 athletes. Which would appear a considerable obstacle on a campus with about 9,000 undergrads.
Organizing 15,000 athletes with 35 staffers would be no small feat of organization either.
Right - it’s no longer an asset!
The $100 a head was for all students, athlete and non athlete. UNO has about 12000 students.
The first and foremost mission of a university is to EDUCATE and not be a glorified training camp for prospective professional athletes. I get aggravated every time I hear that some “student” athlete drops out of college to go pro, most likely after helping himself to an “athletic scholarship” (an oxymoron if I ever heard one).
If the UNO Athletics Department goes down, so be it. Let students actually earn their diplomas.
35 staffers for 140 students? No wonder the program is broke.
