Lawmakers vote to force SC gov to take stimulus [oink oink]

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina legislators on Wednesday voted to force the governor to take $350 million in federal stimulus cash that he has refused to request unless it is used to pare down state debt.

Republican Gov. Mark Sanford has been railing loudly against the $787 billion stimulus package since before President Barack Obama signed it in February. He has been airing ads for weeks paid for by Carolinians for Reform that explain his philosophy of not taking the cash unless it goes toward debt, an idea twice rejected by the White House.

South Carolina agencies and programs stand to see $2.8 billion from the stimulus law during the next two years, mostly for schools. Sanford says he won't request $700 million of that, or $350 million yearly. It's a stance that has raised Sanford's national profile and encouraged speculation about a 2012 presidential bid.

Sanford's supporters tried to kill amendment that would force Sanford to request the money. They lost with 31-12 vote.

Take the money then pay off ythe debt!

It looks like there is no tracking of the funds anyway, and when your economy start improving you can accept the people’s gratitude.

Well, it’s just a bill passed by the legislature like any other, so I’m sure he can veto it, unless they have a veto-proof majority. Even then, the article says the legislation requires him to “ask”, so I’m sure he can “ask” in some way in which the funds will either be acceptable or refused.

I think the reason graham-cracker got reelected might be discernable behind this. Who are the 31 that voted against the 12? Who are their constituents? (Do I need to ask?)

It was sickening watching the Local County Councilwoman stand up and say the Gov. needs to use this for stimulus. What? Since when has any of this money stimulated any jobs or any part of this economy? These dewy eyed kool-aid drinking Obamanites believe anything “The One” tells them. They have been telling college students that Sanford is going to take away education funding by not accepting stimulus money. Sickening.

Can anyone find the information posted about 1 month ago that said if a state Governor refuses to except the stimulus money, the states legislation could vote to except it. This rule that the federal gov made, from what I remember, is constitutionally illegal.

Its the Government taking these states hostage. They are being forced to take the money. At the end, they will all take it. Sucks, but even if they veto it, the legislature will overwrite it
