NEW YORK â At least seven people were in U.S. hospitals with swine flu Tuesday as the number of cases nationwide rose to 64 and a federal health official warned that deaths were likely.
Most of the nation’s confirmed cases were in New York, where the city health commissioner said “many hundreds” of schoolchildren were ill at a school where several students had confirmed cases of swine flu.
Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that although ordinary human flu accounts for 36,000 deaths every year, he was concerned by this strain.
“I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection,” Besser said at an Atlanta news conference.
He said he did not know about a newspaper report of two deaths in two southern California hospitals in which the victims appeared to have suffered from swine flu symptoms.
New York has the largest number of swine flu cases, with a heavy concentration at a Catholic school in Queens where students recently went on a spring break trip to Mexico.
There were indications that the outbreak may have spread beyond the school, with two people having to be hospitalized and officials closing a school for autistic children down the road. Those cases have not been confirmed.
“It is here and it is spreading,” New York City Health Commissioner Thomas Frieden said. “We do not know whether it will continue to spread.”
My boss let me know one of our manager’s left for vacation on Saturday...for Mexico. Dumb, just dumb and I don’t care how much they spent to go.
How can you enjoy your vacation if you are wondering if the maid, the bartender, hot concierge, the waiter/waitress, the bell hop, the airline ticket agent, the TSA person, etc. is infected!
Sometimes, just sometimes it pays to take the loss.
What if they get home and they quarentine her or better what happens if they do close the border and she is stuck there.
Just dumb.
You mean paging Captain Jose!
So you board a flight from Mexico and you hear somebody up front coughing and sneezing and you’re stuck in a little aluminum tube with them for four or five hours...can the day get any worse? Then you land and you see a bunch of folks in hazmat suits...
The Mexicans are saying the flu was actually brought in from the US (which is possible, because the human component is mostly from the US northern Midwest and, for some reason, Italy, while the avian/porcine part is mostly from Asia and Lebanon).
It seems to be having a higher death rate in Mexico than it does here, although it’s not striking slum dwellers in Mexico, but healthy, prosperous people such as the head of the Anthropology Museum.
I think Mexico probably noticed that something odd was happening in the resort areas (the main locus of the flu), but because it makes so much money off of these areas, delayed reporting it, giving the disease a chance to really take off. However, it’s not clear that this flu initiated in Mexico. To me, the main question is where it came from - followed by the question of why Americans are not dying from it, but Mexicans are.
SPRING BREAK IN MEXICO Know Before You Go!
Over 100,000 American teenagers and young adults travel to resort areas throughout Mexico over Spring Break each year.
per the US Dept of State
Gee, they finally figured out that coyotes and illegals are using chater flights?
LOL!
Deaths are bound to begin in the US as the spread continues.

BALTIMORE, Md. - Officials at Baltimore-Washington International Airport say an AirTran flight from Mexico that landed Tuesday evening was held after two passengers on board the plane experienced flu-like symptoms on the plane. All passengers were later cleared by officials, who said there was no danger.
The flight was held upon landing at the airport just before 7 p.m. An airport official told FOX 5 that the flight originated in Cancun, Mexico, and two passengers on the plane had flu-like symptoms.
Those two passengers were being examined out of an abundance of caution amid the current swine flu outbreak, the official said. Those passengers were later cleared.
The other passengers on the plane were allowed to continue on to customs, the official told FOX 5. There are no signs of any danger.
Listen, Hon, ain’t no earplane fulla Mezkins gonna pannik Baltamer peeps.
See a doctor, take some aspirin, drink lots of fluids, get plenty of bed rest, and maybe, just maybe, close the southern border.
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Please add me to your ping list, Hon. I’m a native Marylander.
Incubation period of 7 days, how could they know thay the other passengers didn't contract it?
I would tell everyone, there are lots of places to be aware of. Shopping malls, gas stations (find a way to cover you hands while holding the pump), money (I will use credit card only.
Anyone living in around or use I35 or I40 should be very cautious. Perhaps stay away from the Truck Stops. I also plan to stay home a lot.
we should shut down the government to be safe.
What happens if you are a Muslim and you come down with swine flu?
Balmer, had a friend in the Navy from there. Never could find it on a map. ;)
Only a matter of time.
With 3rd world filth moving north into the states, bringing all sorts of illnesses and infections with them, I am amazed we haven't yet been hit with an epidemic of some sort. Do know Fairfax County is experiencing a surge in TB due to illegals.
