CDC: 'Fully expect we will see deaths'

Apr 28 02:29 PM US/Eastern By MIKE STOBBE ATLANTA (AP)

- A U.S. health official said at least five people are hospitalized with swine flu in the United States and deaths are likely. "I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," as swine flu cases are investigated, said Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control.

He said he did not know about a newspaper report of two deaths in two southern California hospitals in which the victims seemed to be suffering from swine flu symptoms. "I would say I'm very concerned," Besser said.

"We are dealing with a new strain of influenza, we're dealing with a strain of influenza that appears to be moving through our community." Based on the latest lab analysis, Besser said new flu infections are still occurring.

He noted, however, that ordinary human flu accounts for about 36,000 deaths every year in the U.S.

He said hospitalizations nationwide include three in California and two in Texas. Besser said the country has 64 confirmed cases in five states, with 45 in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, six in Texas and 10 in California. At least four other cases have been reported by states.

whats so special about this flu. as said before the “regular” flu kills thounsands of people every year and their is no media hype

This isn't the 'regular' flu. This is a strange cocktail and it has a lot of people who know about these things concerned. The WHO and CDC don't start making pandemic projections every flu season. I don't think you should panic but I don't think it's prudent to take this too lightly.

Buy a small case of "popcorn". We joke about it on FR, but it's nice to have snacks.

Buy some "booze" even if you don't drink. It will have street value :)

It’s what Shep Smith said on TV. Those two statements are not very far apart.

In any event, the CDC has already confirmed that the virus in the US is identical to the Mexican one, so there’s no way it’s fatal only south of our border.

Why is Alcohol a Good Antiseptic?

Ethyl alcohol, more frequently known as grain alcohol, works as an antiseptic by coagulating protein, the primary material that makes up cells. Although alcohol cannot coagulate every single cell, it functions well to inhibit the growth and reproduction of many microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses.

Intriguingly, 70% alcohol is a more effective antiseptic than 100% alcohol. Because alcohol causes protein to coagulate on contact, a 100% solution coming into contact with a microorganism creates a hardened protein wall around the outside of the organism, rather than permeating into its interior. Because microorganisms can be very resilient, this protein shell only causes dormancy rather than death. This can lead to revival and a continuation the cycle of reproduction under the right circumstances. At a purity of 70%, however, the alcohol causes coagulation to occur more gradually, slowing down the microorganism from the inside out.

Human skin cells are more resistant to alcoholic coagulation than most microorganisms. This is why your skin doesn't coagulate if it comes into contact with alcohol. Alcohol is also a good solvent that dissolves and carries away non-organic impurities that are responsible for things like odor. Its antiseptic action does cause a burning sensation on open flesh, as anyone who has ever used alcohol to clean a wound can testify.

Alcohol is an ideal antiseptic because it achieves its goal subtly through coagulation, rather than through some active means like active poisoning or dissolving. Throwing acid on an open wound would only be successful at removing the contaminating microorganisms at the expense of a decent chunk of flesh. Ethyl alcohol should never be confused with methyl alcohol, also known as methanol or wood alcohol. Methyl alcohol is used in industry as a solvent, and should never be used for any medical reason. Even small quantities can cause blindness or paralysis, and large quantities can be fatal.

Chocolate. LOTS of Chocolate! Won’t help with the flu, but it’s a good way to spend time.

LOL!

What many people - and our "esteemed" - MSM ignore.

Have no fear the empty suit figure head TOTUS is kept fully informed while playing golf, attending photo-ops, on vacation, playing basket ball or other more important items to promote himself.

In the meantime people die.

“I wouldn’t take Tamiflu or any other drug unless I had to. And we are in the pharmacy business.”

Would you please tell me why? What’s wrong with Tamiflu?

don’t think the docs have any reliable mortality stats on this one yet.

Of course they don't. But, plenty want to get that face time on the TeeVee, don't they?

I’m stocking up on colloidal silver. The last time I had the flu (this past February), the silver knocked it out in 18 hours flat. It was a miracle cure - once I took it, I stopped puking my guts out.

If this gets as bad as the hype suggests, pharmacies will be facing armed mobs looking for tamiflu.

Good luck on them finding any. Most pharmacies that I know only order most of it when needed. So far, around here it isn't needed so we don't order it.

Our deliveries come everyday. No need to stock up on Tamiflu when we don't need it. There is too much else to spend our money on that is needed.

Our druggies wouldn't know what it was anyway. They would rather have stupid stuff they use to 'invent' stuff to kill themselves. And most of them are so far gone they are lucky they can find the front door.

We had one stab herself between the legs. I don't know what that proved or how that helped but it sure was an interesting way to start the day.

I find it very interesting that on that link plus many others that they are now emphasizing how this will delay the "economic recovery". Great timing for an excuse that they can use for the next two years and the crazy thing is that his supporters will let it slide!
