Senator Arlen Specter (PA), who switched from the Republican to Democrat party on Tuesday (April 28), admitted that he did so due to an unwillingness to let voters decide his fate.
I am unwilling to have my twenty-nine year Senate record judged by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate, he said in the statement.
I dont have to say anything to them. Theyve said it to me, Specter said.
Specter, 79, has been a Republican for his five terms in the Senate. However, he had recently come under fire for supporting the Obama stimulus plan and was expected to face a tough primary challenge from Pat Toomey in 2010.
In addition, the state had been trending democratic in recent years, meaning that Specter could have also faced a difficult challenge in the general election if he stayed with his former party.
A typical 79 yr old male has an average life expectancy of 7.5 years - throw in cancer, and its probably shorter. So, Toomey should take the high road and urge the voters to send the s.o.b. back home so he can die with his family.
LOL. Yes. That is one way to call him exactly what he is. LOL. I was just going to go for the two word version, but I think you covered it nicely. :-).
Aye, mustn’t be thinkin’ too clearly... didn’t realize the age of the old coot!
There should be an age limit on congress. These were NEVER meant to be the life-time appointments that these leeches seem to think they have.
His vot FOR the “Stimulus” package was what did him in!!
What an arrogant ass. Way, way too much of this in Washington.
I agree.
What Specter doesn’t quite realize is that there are lots of Keystone State Democrats that don’t care much for him either.
If someone can mount an effective primary challenge, Arlen will be lose the Democrat primary.
Specter is the classic example of today’s corrupt elitist- minded sphincters in Congress. Hope the voters can muster up enough Kaopectate to flush this turd once and for all.
IOW, the people who elected you are about to fire your sorry butt, and you need some new voters.
I noted that line. But I had to replay it like four times to make sure I actually heard what I thought I heard.
Oh yeah that worked out really well the first time.
He’s too Left for the Republicans, but not Left enough to generate enthusiasm from the Dems.
They should recall that jacka$$.
IOW DC beltway supports voter fraud because they don’t want the electorate votes to reaaaaaly count.
Thank you, Pat Toomey! :)
-How bout you go out and get a JOB for the first time in your life???
He did have a job - he's the lawyer who got Ira Einhorn out of jail on a murder charge for some measly amount of bail, which he promptly skipped on and headed for France. Google it up. I saw the reference to Einhorn on another Spector thread and googled it myself, because I remember the case well - Einhorn axed his girlfriend to death and kept her body in their apartment for years before getting caught. France refused to extradite him until the US promised not to seek the death penalty. I had not known Spector was his attorney for the original trial (late 70's or early 80's). If I'd enabled that kind of killer to escape, even inadvertently, there's no way I'd have the face to run for public office - I'd probably change my name and leave town. But not Arlen!
actually it seems like Specter is a very ANGRY person.
He is furious at the electorate.
“I will not let the voters decide!! I love my cushy job and NO ONE is going to take it away from me! If this does not work, I will join the Peace and Freedom Party or the United Socialists! I am prepared to do whatever it takes! You all have no idea what a great gig this is.”
This HAS to be the Best Line of the Day!!!
IF (a big if in this case)
Mr. Specter was a man of honor, and ever was and still were a true Republican, he would have simply bowed out of the race, accepted that HE had lost touch with his party.
What he demonstrates, by switching party affiliation now, as he sits (hopefully his last days) in the Senate, is that he now seeks to threaten the party he has illegitimately claimed as his all these years.
It is not any “bi-partisanship” he ever sought, or now seeks, but a place where his true liberal bent no longer has to hide behind the pretense of “bi-partisanship”.
