The cat who refuses to eat meat

by Carl Wieland

28 April 2009

Living as we do in a cursed, post-Fall world, it’s hard to imagine a cat that would refuse to eat meat—and whose palate cannot even be tempted by fish.

Some previous articles of ours (see below) have covered such things as lions brought up on non-meat diets like pasta, cheese and eggs—which highlights that even today, some animals that are believed to be “obligate carnivores” do not actually need to eat meat after all. But Britain’s “veggie cat” seems truly unique...

Called “Dante”, the black and white feline was found by Miss Becky Page, abandoned and starving, as a fluffy kitten. A tasty bowl of chicken was rejected. Dante also turned his nose up at a serve of fish. But when he spied some leftover vegetables, the starving youngster hungrily devoured them.

It sounds like this cat had a major nutritional deficiency from 'starving' which made it attracted to veg and it became accustomed to that. Anyone who has owned a cat knows once they get into a routine, they rarely break it. My cats eat only one type of food all the time and if you try anything else, they turn their nose up at it, even for a couple of days... (a battle of wills between the cats and myself.)

Can you imagine...a lion that takes down a watermellon, a crocodile that tips over your canoe to get at your sliced cucumber, a Killer Whale that harvests seaweed, or an eagle with a penchant for fruit salad...those WILL BE the days!

Our kitty won’t eat soft foods, including meat. But her kibble has meat, and she chows it down as if she were afraid of starvation.

Exactly. There's a reason cats are called finicky.

Our old cat went wild for Stewed Tomatoes. He went even wilder for Lobster.

We adopted a cat and found that she only likes chicken with gravy or chicken flavored kibble. Of course she first licks all the gravy off..then comes back later for the wet food. She does like tuna juice, but not the meat so much.

Even giving her small samples of beef, pork, bacon, ham, and other meats doesn’t tempt her. She’ll sniff and maybe eat one small piece but then she’s done.

She’s also one of the messiest eaters I’ve seen. Always starts with the far end of her bowl and gets kibble everywhere. I need to get one of those large cafeteria trays just to contain the spillage. :)

I bet he ate some bad meat while living on his own. Food poisoning is hard to forget. I haven’t enjoyed tuna salad since the tuna salad sandwich I had at Arcosanti made me wish-you-wuz-dead sick almost 20 years ago.

Yea, I guess those ripping and shredding sharp teeth these animals have are for the really tuff carrots and pasta.

This part is funny...

Miss Page insists that Dante does not supplement his diet with wild prey.

I wonder if she notices a lack of spiders or other bugs in her house. A cat's favorite treat.

Cats can eat a lot of plant material (bread, potato chips) but cannot live without animal protein. They are stricter carnivores than dogs are.

Dogs are a lot more omnivorous, I think they can live entirely on plant foods.

A cat I used to have loved bread. We always knew he was on the counter because we’d hear the cellophane bread wrapper crinkle. He also loved spaghetti and meat sauce. It was funny to see him after eating with a big red ring around his mouth from the sauce.

Our cat will only eat dry cat food. Never have to worry about leaving food out. He won’t touch anything else other than kitty treats. Won’t go near tuna fish or the water its packed in.
