NEW YORK (AP) It was supposed to be a photo op that captured images of an Air Force One plane with a majestic Statue of Liberty in the background. Instead, it turned into a public relations nightmare that led to recriminations from the president and mayor and prompted thousands other to ask, "What were they thinking?"
Just before the workday began on Monday, an airliner and supersonic fighter jet zoomed past the lower Manhattan skyline. Within minutes, startled financial workers streamed out of their offices, fearing a nightmarish replay of Sept. 11....
An Air Force combat photographer took pictures from one of the fighter jets, administration officials said.
The photo op was combined with a training exercise to save money, according to another administration official who also spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to speak publicly about the behind-the-scenes discussions about the flight....
It had a classified footnote that said, "Information in this document shall not be released to the public or the media."

It's a laugh riot that the Obamabots got hit with the flu and the flyover all at once. Rahm must be getting Excedrin Headache #45. ROTFL
I wonder which crisis Rahm will "waste" (/snic)....fly or flu?
And wasn't it a riot when O's trusty teleprompter failed----he didn't know what to say until they rewound it. LOL.
But alas I'm sure it's all George Bush's fault....everything is Bush's fault....
Oh come on. Haven't you ever heard of "opaque transparency"?
Well, sure, if you’re actually going to read the article before commenting. But where’s the challenge in that? </s>
I thought I had read it pretty completely, guess I missed something!
Thanks!

No further investigations from you Shmuckie? We know you got it in ya!
Yes, it is.
Great photoshop, thanks!

Okay, I found a handful of his pictures posted on line and every one of them has canopy reflections. Not to say that they aren't good pictures, but all of them I found looking through 50 or so websites have reflections. Got a link to any of his "great shots" that don't have canopy reflections?
It's similar with civilian pilots. We are required to do 3 take offs and landings (full stop) every 90 days in type and are required to do a biannual flight review with an instructor every two years in the most complex aircraft we operate. Instrument rated pilots are required to do more.
I have a couple of friends who either were or are Air Force or Navy pilots and I'm aware that they are required to stay current and often combine missions for that purpose. My question was if this was indeed a "training mission" as the White House claimed, what precisely were they training for? Has there ever been another "training mission" that anyone can point to that called for Air Force One to fly around lower Manhattan (unannounced) with an F-16 in trail? Certainly hasn't happened since 9/11 that I'm aware of. If it was indeed a training mission, fine. I suspect this was just another Obamalamadingdong excuse to shift blame to anyone but himself, though.....
No need for the questions. The answer is that the President is Bush League and overwhelmed with power.
He has several books out with his pictures,
“My question was if this was indeed a “training mission” as the White House claimed, what precisely were they training for? “
Probably VFR/IFR training. As for the photo op, the Statue of Liberty is one of the standard backdrops for airplane porn.
