WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. Park Police say they have arrested 91 protesters in front of the White House, including some in wheelchairs who chained themselves to a fence. The protesters are calling on the president to support legislation that would give people with disabilities in need of long-term care alternatives to nursing homes.

Sgt. David Schlosser says a large group gathered on a sidewalk outside the White House on Monday without a protest permit required for groups of more than 25 demonstrators.

He says some protesters are in wheelchairs and have chained themselves to a fence. Police may use a bolt-cutter to cut the chains.

The protesters are receiving written citations from officers, but are not being handcuffed or taken to a detention facility.

Petitioning or Protesting the Government, that is NOT allowed! {Despite what you may have read in that old, outdated, and non-binding document called the Constitution.}

I’m guessing this wasn’t the “photo-op” Obama was looking for today...

I am not seeing this on the evening news. This would be wonderfully compelling video. You know...Bush hates the disabled.

Oops, forgot. Never mind.

Amendment I to the Constitution states in part that ... “Congresss shall make no law respecting ... the right of the people peaceably to assemble ...”

Janet’s going to have to revise her ‘terrorist’ list to include people in wheelchairs! If it’s a vet in a wheelchair, he’s a double danger!

I find this country so strange where Auntie Illegal gets a reprieve and joe citizen gets detention or investigated.

I recall some protests of Bush that went on and on and on...

OMG - do I actually agree with Bam Bam on this one? I’m tired of all of the gimme gimme gimme, I don’t care if it’s the disabled, the blind, the poor, the old, the gays with AIDS, the vets, the banks, the Martians, etc. If these people would go to church they would find the help they need (want). The rest of us can’t afford to support all of them anymore.

Well lets see which would get into the news paper:

1) The empty suit figurehead POTUS with his shirt off and the ever present basketball at his side, for the 1000th time?

2) People in wheelchairs receiving written citations from officers for protesting in a peaceful way?

Anyone have a guess?

Why? If they really care about their cause, let them stay there for a month or two.

They better be protesting Obama Care since some of those with disabilities will be denied medical treatment because it isn’t cost effective.

It's tough in a wheelchair.

I wish Cheney would have had one of these ;o)

Why do I care? My wife of 33 years is transitioning from forearm crutches to a wheelchair. She has cerebral palsy which affects her ability to walk but she has tremendous upper body strength. She would prefer a chair that didn't look like the one i posted above. If there are any FReepers out there that knows where all the cool wheelchairs are ... please FReepmail me ;o)

Nobama has no time for the “little people”, especially the disabled. I can’t imagine Sarah Palin would have ever let something like that happen. She would probably have invited them in for tea. This administration is slime!

My husband is in a wheelchair due to a horrible auto accident involving a police chase. He was the “innocent bystander” you always hear about. He can use a walker, but not for long. I recently got him a new wheelchair from Quickie. Google them. A large selection of wheelchairs and accessories. I wish your wife the best. I never realized how difficult life could be for those in a wheelchair until it hit home. She is fortunate to have you. God bless you both.

I'm learning quickly. We bought a lightweight transport chair on Friday ($300) and it's handy for getting her to the bathroom and around the house with me pushing it. She's been so independent for so many years with just the use of crutches that it has surprised both of us just how hard it is going to be now. Anyway, thank you for the tip, your kind comments and we wish you and your husband the very best.

These protesters must have been disturbing his beauty sleep or drawing unwanted attention. There’s no way that the disabled & the sick would be arrested unless Barry gave the green light to put an end to it.
