FAA says low-flying plane over Staten Island is 'pre-planned' flight to take photos by Staten Island Advance Monday April 27, 2009, 10:03 AM
A plane, that appears to be a commercial jet tailed by fighter jets, is a "pre-planned" military flight taking photos of the Statue of Liberty, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Reports indicate it may be Air Force One.
"It is pre-planned, pre-coordinated with everyone involved," said FAA spokesman Jim Peters. "It's a military flight over New York to take photos."
Peters, who stressed it is not an emergency, said the flight is circling the Statue of Liberty and New York City to take photos.
Peters said city officials as well as state government agencies in New York and New Jersey were briefed on the flight in advance.
Between 10-10:30am EST.
The markets started tanking immediately.
Formations of Fighter Jets fly low over Manhattan every Fleet Week. A friend of mine didn’t know it was Fleet Week, and it scared her to death. But low-flying planes over New York City are nothing unusual.
Could be an E-4B, like the one that showed up after 9-11 to monitor the situation.
Oh for God’s sake, what the hell is wrong with these people.
I don’t know why..but for some reason this picture of all the clueless people evacuating WFC breaks my heart for these people...that overhead twitter shot just brings back floods of 9/11 memories..
Bovine excrement.
You don't scare the crap out of the people of NY, by low-flying a jumbo jet with military escorts without warning.
Thousands evacuated and were scared spitless.
“Coming soon to a campaign commercial near you.”
Wonder how New Yorkers are going to feel when they find out that this was a shoot ordered by Rahm Emmanuel for a campaign commercial for the Zero? Using our military as a prop should be against the law. Do we know yet if it was ordered by the Obama Administration?
Air Force One photo op startles New Yorkers

I guess they never heard of Photoshop.
And reading the comments of the local witnesses on the news sites, most of them seem to have been very upset by this, and rightly so.
For the rest of us it's just another demonstration of the incompetence of this administration.
I think so too.
Here are a couple of comments posted on NJ.com — this is an outrage.
1. “Are the F’ing nuts. I’m sitting at my desk in 17 State Street and suddenly see an airliner out my office window banking heavily to my right chased by a military jet it then goes out of NJ an heads straight back for my building. I still shaking from the experience. You’d think they at least give some kind of heads up. I want someones head to roll over this one.”
2. “Inappropriate? Alert us. Scary. Totally irresponsible and unacceptable. My wife just called me in tears.”
It breaks my heart too.
I’m in Chicago and I’m spitting mad that thousands of people had to experience this fear.
And for WHAT???
Unfreakingbelievable.
At the very least they need to disclose the purpose of photos. Why AF-1? Is it going to be on this years “Holiday” cards? Are they going to start selling rides on it? Idiots.
Sounds reasonable ... are you a former or current military person who knows that photo-equipped F-16s (aren't ALL F-16s photo-equipped?) would typically be the photog planes? And if low photo-op flybys with these big AF1 jets are so common all over at major city airports, why haven't such flybys made people nervous in the eight years since 9-11? Surely they would, and we would have heard about at least one or two of them in nearly a decade ...
In other words, your explanation sounds reasonable at first glance, but I wish I knew more about your credibility with regard to pronouncing that F-16s would be the photo planes, and the idea that things like this are common with AF1 photoshoots. There's no way you can tell me that a Staten Island shoot has happened after 9-11 until NOW -- nine years. Certainly they should have let New Yorkers know; if the pres was not on the plane, there was no risk to nat'l security letting the public know.
I don't think it's being paranoid to smell bullsh*t in the official explanation of this. I think pooh-pooing it is a nice way to feel like a self-appointed grown-up: "Now now, children!"
“After the incident, New York City released an advisory that the flyover was “part of an approved federal activity.”
Since when are commercials for Obama ‘federal activity’? We need to get to the bottom of this ASAP!!
Low-flying presidential plane sows panic in New York
NEW YORK (AFP) One of President Barack Obama’s planes, escorted by two fighter jets, spread panic here Monday when they flew over New York at low altitude, triggering office evacuations in the city still scarred by the 9/11 attacks.
But the low-flying planes which buzzed parts of southern Manhattan and the Hudson River for about 30 minutes were out just for a Pentagon exercise.
“The presidential airlift group conducted an aerial photo in the New York city area today,” said US Air Force spokesman Major Richard Johnson.....

Have you read any of the comments from the "paranoid" people in NYC?
Correction, they're OUR planes. He's merely borrowing them from us while he's in the job.
