Ohio Boy's Swine Flu Matches Deadly Mexican Strain

NEW YORK — The swine flu virus that sickened a 9-year-old Ohio boy is the same strain as the one that has killed up to 86 people in Mexico, an emergency official said Sunday. Laboratory tests by the Ohio Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed the case matches the deadly strain, said Lorain County Emergency Management Agency spokesman Clifton Barnes.

Health department spokesman Robert Jennings said the boy has a mild case of the disease and is recovering at his home in Elyria, in northern Ohio's Lorain County. The child's name was not released.

"“He went to a fair, he went to a farm, he went to visit family around Mexico,”

"Swine Flu in Humans:

Can humans catch swine flu? Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with swine flu have occurred. Most commonly, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (e.g. children near pigs at a fair or workers in the swine industry). In addition, there have been documented cases of one person spreading swine flu to others. For example, an outbreak of apparent swine flu infection in pigs in Wisconsin in 1988 resulted in multiple human infections, and, although no community outbreak resulted, there was antibody evidence of virus transmission from the patient to health care workers who had close contact with the patient."

That’s a large part of it from the school’s perspective.

From the parents, many parents either are both working and not willing to take time off for something that could be insignificant, or they can’t stand having the kids around and force them to go to school no matter how sick they are.

I’ve talked with teachers who are appalled at how sick some kids are and still forced to go to school by the parents who aren’t interested.

I have raised three sons, the youngest will graduate from high school next month. If I kept them home every time they had “flu-like symptoms” they would still be in elementary school. My gauge was a fever. Unless they had a fever, they went to school.

Son 1 and son 3 were not ones to make up excuses to stay home. Son 2 on the other hand showed me a thermometer with a reading of 106 one morning. LOL! He went to school that day. He just could not understand why I accused him of putting the thermometer up to the light bulb.

At any rate, if the parents were not aware of this outbreak, I cannot fault them.

Here’s the Google map tracking the locations, worldwide, of Mexican flu occurrences:

They try to keep it updated. Scroll down for the latest.

He visited Mexico. Seems only he has come down with it, and once again, a “mild” case...recuperating at home, no hospitalization needed. It does say he’s being treated, so I’d imagine he’s taking one of the anti-virals that seem to be effective against this flu.

Our local ISD gets its per capita $$ from the state based upon attendance at 10am each day.

The other reason for kids going when sick is of course child care issues and/or loss of income if one parent has to stay home, or even job security issues for “excessive” absences and so on.

“t wouldn’t surprise me if the socialists in the executive and legislative branches of government used this as an excuse to deny large public gatherings such as the tea parties.

The illegal alien groups have marches planned. The government wouldn’t dream of stopping all that.

We homeschooled through 9th grade, and then our son went to Dual Credit at our local college. He’s graduated college now, and is doing graduate work. He’s never missed a day of college the entire time he’s attended. Sad to say though, that means he’s often gone when he was ill. He’d medicate himself with over the counter meds, and go to class. He just never wanted to miss class because he found it so much easier to make decent grades if you always went to class.

Of course, in college, you go to the class, sit through it and leave, so it probably doesn’t cause the level of contact that you’d have in a elementary, middle, or high school.

But in the workplace, think how often people go to work even when they’re sick. At my husband’s workplace, they even have a policy in place that your first day of sickness comes from your vacation pay, not your sick leave. That does nothing but encourage people to come to work sick. From the company’s perspective, they think it keeps people from using sick days just for “fun.”

he Centers for Disease Control has issued a recommendation to close any school building that where a student has tested positive for swine flu so a thorough cleaning can be done, said Doug Dever, public information officer for the Lorain County Emergency Operations Center.

One freaking student and BO's socialist run government closes down the whole school!! This increasingly apparent manufactured situation smells more with each passing second.

lol/ and so true. . .and knowing this invites 'higher ratings'; seems they can hardly contain their enthusiasm while reporting the 'horror/terror/nightmare' et al senarios.

Thanks. . .interesting the 'incubation time' here; or perhaps he was mildly ill and Parents did not realize it. Whatever the case; wish the child 'good health' and soon. It will be interesting to see if anyone else in his family gets this. Particularly those who accompanied this boy on trip. . .

Am wondering in the meantime, what precipitated this outbreak. . .

There is a chance that the boy’s parents are illegals, there is very heavy Hispanic population in Lorain.
