CDC head: expect more severe cases
The Hill's Blog Briefing Room ^ | 4/26/2009 | Eric Zimmermann

Posted on 04/26/2009 4:53:43 PM PDT by EBH

The United States is likely to experience more cases of swine flu, the head of the Centers of Disease Control said today. And the disease is likely to become more dangerous.

"We are seeing more cases of swine flu, and we expect to see more cases of swine flu," said Richard Besser, Director of the CDC, at a White House briefing. "I would expect that over time we are going to see more severe disease in this country."

Basser said the CDC is aware of 20 confirmed cases of swine flu in five U.S. states: eight in New York, one in Ohio, two in Kansas, two in Texas, and seven in California. Only one case was severe enough for hospitalization, Basser said.

Basser said the virus in the United States appears to be same strain as the one that has caused over 60 deaths in Mexico.

Why does that voice in my head keep saying the socialists are trying to manufacture a medical crisis as they have a financial crisis?

Well of course, over time, somebody who has health issues will get it and probably die, just like they do every year from the flu. But he also said:

Only one case was severe enough for hospitalization, Basser said

He's not just talking about not dying, he's talking, not even needing hospitalization.

There’s really no reason for it to be more fatal in Mexico than in the US.

After all, half of Mexico already is in the US.

Agreed. I’m failing to panic, myself. The unusual thing about this outbreak is the time of year, but schools will be out shortly, which will eliminate one major contagion vector.

Stay out of Mexico, wash your hands.

There is something that isn’t right about this. It came up all of a sudden and the O admin is overplaying this.

I smell a rat.

Well folks here seem to be getting better on their own, for the most part. They did mention in one article that Tamiflu was used successfully, so how many of the US patients had Tamiflu (who knows.)

Antivirals are amazing medicines. I was 42 when I contracted the chicken pox, but I knew I had been exposed, so I took acyclovir, and I the entire course of my illness was 5 days.

Absolute nonsense. The only people who are EVER at risk from ANY influenza are the elderly with concomitant disease states, those with altered or deteriorated immune systems, and young children. If you’re healthy and you become infected, YOU’LL survive! Typical virus-hunter scare tactics! I assume they have all you afraid of the HIV retrovirus! You poor shlubs!

School getting out is a good thing. So many times flu is spread so easily in school or the work place for that matter.

My kid has one more week of college, then a few finals the first week of May. I told him, wash your hands often, carry a hand sanitizer with you (they have these neat little pens now that spray hand sanitizer and you can easily pack them in a book bag), and most importantly, if he thought he was getting the flu, get to the doctor and get an antiviral med within the first 24 hours of being sick.

Gave same advice to my husband about his workplace, and I work from home. We’ve come a long way in disease prevention too, IMHO, because at the grocery, you can always grab a hand sanitizer sheet on the way in and on the way out. That’s got to be doing some good in preventing the spread of viruses, colds, flu, etc.

I heard a research guy from CDC say on radio last night that they had done research on virus and were going to release a press release saying this virus is genetically altered or weaponed by Communist Chinese. Press release was stopped.

There must be a lot of money to be made in global-pandemic fear-mongering, almost as much as in global-warming and Y2K.

Most people who caught the Spanish Flu early last century got well, about 97.5% of them.

Of course, the 2.5% who didn’t added up to a staggering death count.

Lets not panic!

Keep the borders open. Get the border patrol to hand out tissues and painters masks, and treat them as they come in. Lets be compassionate about this.
