Napolitano declares public health emergency @ 1:01 pm by Eric Zimmermann
The United States will declare the swine flu outbreak a public health emergency, Homeland Security Director Janet Napolitano said today.
Speaking at a White House press briefing, Napolitano said the declaration is not as severe it sounds.
"It allows us to free up state and local resources" that otherwise would not be available, Napolitano said.
The declaration does not necessarily convey the authority to initiate quarantines.
"We're nowhere near that kind of decision," Napolitano said.
Also at the briefing, the Director of the Center for Disease Control, Richard Besser, warned that there will likely be more cases of the swine flu detected in the U.S., adding those cases will grow more severe.
Totally oblivious to the potential deaths of millions, in what is a pattern of typical disregard for threatened minorities in the path of this deadly killer, Bush ignores the largest threat to our nation since Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and instead played golf.
I wish someone would explain to me how the Federal Govt can “free up State and Local resources”....do they hold them in cages or something? As far as looking incompetent, they just looked as what they are.
Folks, this could be the last straw for our economy. If they start quarantining, you can kiss about every mall in the United States good-bye. Online would be the only way to buy, and that would be suspect as well, since the delivery guy could be a carrier to multiple dwellings and businesses.
Good luck!
Bingo! LOL!!
Im calling it Mexiflu, from another posters suggestion.
The Mexican Mix-up Flu (I never salsach a thing.)
This is one reason why I have been very restrained when it comes to panicking about diseases. When you have an administration like this one, it’s like putting a gun to your own head and putting Napolitano’s finger on the trigger.
I wish you would quit posting scary looking pictures of our fearless leader, you may frighten foreign countries with pictures like that! :^)
“I dont get it. They declare a public health emergency but do not issue a travel warning.”
Amazing, isn’t it? Other countries have issued travel warnings to MExico and the USA. THANKS, Mexico!
Last night I was listening to radio. Some ‘expert’ said the time to worry would be when Obama gets on TV to tell us ‘not to worry’. We shall see.
Reconsider that Subway ride tomorrow morning, too... Carpooling with a healthy buddy might be a wise thing until we know this bug isn't mutating from the current Swine-Avian-Human variant... I wouldn't personally risk my chances on a 6 percent mortality rate if I lived near one of the known hotzones ... but again, that's a personal call.
Tamiflu might not work for all and there's no guarantee the government can get it out in time if it mutates... Don't panic -- instead, be prudent.
Current first-hand accounts from Mexico on the BBC:
Man o man, would that be a very stupid move of biblical proportion!
I went to Meijer shopping at 2AM Saturday. Not many customers, just a bunch of Hispanic men cleaning.
sure is
Today must have been FART in the wind day for Dimwits.
Round up the pro-lifers and quarantine them ASAP!
And watch out for those returning veterans! You never know what they picked up over there.
I went to Sam’s in Ohio yesterday on a unusually warm and sunny day in Ohio. Not too many people out, but I guess on Saturday Janet had not told us to worry yet!
That’s when I realized that we were dying of PC.
It’s COMMON SENSE to say, “It’s not advisable at this time to travel to Mexico.”
Where are the deaths? MEXICO! And still NO warning about traveling there. That’s assinine.
I think they’re worried about making Mexico tourism suffer.
Geez. Concern should have dictated a different answer to that question. “We do not advise you to travel to Mexico at this time.”
Watching the press conference, I thought they were actually underplaying the thing. I think they have no clue.
And they are “questioning” people at the border to see if they are sick. If you don’t have a doctor in Mexico and you get something...where are you going to head? Straight to an ER in the US.
Agreed!
I have a question.....how do they evict you from your home for foreclosure when you are quarantined......
You would be unable to work and unable to actually leave?
How would that work?
Janet’s the only one around so she had to DO SOMETHING.
