As Michelle Obama nears her first 100 days as First Lady, a new book celebrates her fabulous fashion choices. “It’s her journey to the White House through the filter of her style,” says former fashion mag editor-in-chief Mandi Norwood, author of “Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion” (William Morrow, $19.99) out May 5, which chronicles Mrs. O’s signature looks — from the belted purple sheath dress she wore on the night her husband got the nomination, to the $148 White House/Black Market black-and-white print dress she bought off the rack.

The Chicago Tribune wrote how polling found that she is more popular than other recent first ladies — that even 67% of Republican women hold a favorable view of her!

Well, it's not like first ladies have that much of a job, so it's purely a popularity contest. People are going to say they like her until she -- or more likely her husband -- does something that gets on their nerves.

There's been some comparison between her high popularity and Rosalyn Carter's or Pat Nixon's lower ratings, but there aren't ongoing tracking polls for this, so it's sort of a random number, almost pulled out of the air.

Also, overkill is a factor. If one just looked at pictures of her in the comical outfits she's wearing one would find her tiresome or comical or annoying soon enough. But an excess of catty comments produces it's own counterreaction.

Interesting because I heard on radio on Friday that Laura Bush was more popular. That said, what would anyone expect from the CHICAGO tribune—the shill of the administration. They are sucking up because they want bailout money IMHO.

The sad thing is that jacket in the second pic would be pretty on her minus the belt and tank. I don’t get her obsession with blues and greens together.

Eclectic is really hard to do imo. It takes the right person to pull it off.

I/ve got to tell you I only stay on this ping list because the reputation of our once great republic is on the line, and its values need defending. After those pictures though, I have to say, it is awfuly tough standing by a country and doing one’s duty when it does not want to be stood by apparently.
