Asian-Americans blast UC admissions policy They say new standards are unfair, will reduce their numbers on campus
April 24, 2009
SAN FRANCISCO - A new admissions policy set to take effect at the University of California system in three years is raising fears among Asian-Americans that it will reduce their numbers on campus, where they account for a remarkable 40 percent of all undergraduates.
University officials say the new standards the biggest change in UC admissions since 1960 are intended to widen the pool of high school applicants and make the process more fair.
But Asian-American advocates, parents and lawmakers are angrily calling on the university to rescind the policy, which will apply at all nine of the system's undergraduate campuses.
They point to a UC projection that said the new standards would sharply reduce Asian-American admissions while resulting in little change for blacks and Hispanics, and a big gain for white students.
"I like to call it affirmative action for whites," said Ling-chi Wang, a retired professor at UC Berkeley. "I think it's extremely unfair to Asian-Americans on the one hand and underrepresented minorities on the other."
Asian-Americans are the single largest ethnic group among UC's 173,000 undergraduates. In 2008, they accounted for 40 percent at UCLA and 43 percent at UC Berkeley the two most selective campuses in the UC system as well as 50 percent at UC San Diego and 54 percent at UC Irvine.
Asian-Americans are about 12 percent of California's population and 4 percent of the U.S. population overall.

The second problem is they did not differentiate between South Asians (Pakistanis and Saudis and Iraqis) and East Asians.
The patterns are going to be different. One detailed study I saw indicated that Philippinos voted Republican. Hard to tell how Japanese-Americans in the 48 voted because they no longer live in concentrated areas but are "assimilated". Most Chinese are equally assimilated and difficult to track with any sort of statistically meaningful survey.
The answer is no one really knows how Asian-Americans as a group are voting, but Fur Shur the ones getting booted out of UC's school system are East Asians. If they weren't voting Republican before they will be now.
Excellent point. With the possible exception of the Vietnamese, most Asians (Chinese and Indians in particular) tend to vote Drats as do Middle-Easterners.
Voters? What do they matter? Test scores? Who cares about 'em? We need a BETTER way to do things! We need a SMART admission policy! /libthink>
Look for the some CA schools to start dropping out of the Top 20 soon, since they're driving away their best and brightest.
Perhaps if the students in question stopped identifying themselves as a specific hyphenated ethnic group - they would have better luck convincing others, they should not be discriminated against when they’re in the majority.
Just saying.
Racism is racism.
I don’t know any (white) American, not even one I have ever met, who has identified as “European-American”.
Not one.
Ever.
Research I was doing prior to the election indicated they would be voting heavily Democrat. I think it has always been that way. They do not identify with lefty liberalism as a whole, but they do vote overwhelming D. Nearly every elected Asian official is a D. The Asian websites were all promoting the D party and strengthening their voice with the D vote. Muslims were encouraed to do the same - vote with one voice-D.
I’m guessing the Asian D-vote was in the high 80%tile.
That’s right. In CA, they were in support of Hillary 80/20, but defaulted to Obama when up against McCain.

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund today released a report on a multilingual exit poll of more than 4,700 Asian-American voters in nine states, conducted during the 2006 elections. Among its findings:
Four out of five Asian-American voters supported Democratic candidates in top races such as the Senate contests in New Jersey and Virginia. South Asianssuch as Asian-Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshiswere the most Democratic, the report said.
Southeast Asians, such as Vietnamese, were the least likely to be enrolled in the Democratic Party. Filipinos had the highest rates of people enrolled in the Republican Party (22%), but a majority (52%) were Democrats and nearly a quarter (24%) were not enrolled in either party.
Very interesting info. Thanks.

Don’t promote the the Rat idea that “Asians” are monolithic. They’re not.
It has been polled over and over again (less more recently though) that Filipinos and Vietnamese have held conservative political views at 70 and 70 percent margins.
Here’s the site I mentioned below, don’t know if they archive the older polls showing thatwithout any ambiguity:

Be careful. As I said earlier it’s a leftie site and they’ve become less objective and honest in more recent years.

“Asian-Indians” ???????
At the same time the East Asians are dramatically outnumbered by the South Asians virtually all of whom think the Democrats are the "party of the people".
In my experience most South Asians are very gullible when it comes to conmen and Democrat liars.
Michigan Proposal 2: Rejecting claims that Asian Americans are hurt by affirmative action programs, three in four Asian American voters voted No to Proposal 2, which seeks to end race- and gender-based affirmative action programs in education, hiring, contracting, and health initiatives. More than 300 Asian American votersincluding Arab Americansparticipated in AALDEFs exit poll survey in Michigan . Proposal 2 passed by a wide margin, 58% to 42% .
In other words, they are defining the Muzzies in Michigan the same way the British define them (Asians) rather than the way our census bureau defines them (Caucasian unless they are from Indonesia, Malaysia and points east, in which case the become Asian).
Yes, people from India are classified as Asian-Indians to differentiate the term from Ameri-Indians (Native-Americans).
I’ve seen that classification & terminology over the past few years.
It is true that they are not a monolithic voting group, but because the Vietnamese, Filipino, Samoan, Viet Cong, Laotian, and other groups represent small fractions of a percentage, they generally end up lumped together.
“”are intended to widen the pool of high school applicants and make the process more fair.””
Fair? Hmmm
No, students should simply drop the class and take it from someone who speaks English. They’ll get better teachers. If they want to learn Mandarin, they can take a class in it.
guess we need to stop immigration form these pro-democrate voting groups. we shouldonly allow imigration by folks that believe inteh constitution and bill of rights, thatwould prevent any from voting demoncrat.
no wonder the liberals like all these refuges, they tend to vote demoncrat.
but hey we all one big melting pot, all ideas are equaly good, all religions equal, all political and economic systems equall. that why we open our doors to all the worlds refuse. now look what we got. socialism voted in by the masses that were raised on socialism, and never taught true American history.
Your examples above perfectly illustrate the problem.
The Vietnamese, Khmer, Malay, Thai, and others in the SE Asian region are not of the same ethnicity.
So if one wants to conduct political opinion polls based on the East or Southeast Asia geographical region, that's one thing.
If one then says "Well, it's really a poll of the Asian ethnicity," it is absolutely stupid.
There is no "Asian ethnicity."
