Senior McCain aide: The GOP is a 'shrinking entity'

“It was communicated back to us very clearly from within the party that not only was Senator Lieberman not acceptable, but any pro-choice nominee was not acceptable, [and] it would lead to a floor fight at the convention with an alternate nominee for vice president put into play.

“Blowing up the party wasn’t one of the menu items of things that were going to improve our situation,” he said.

Schmidt also criticized his party’s political performance in the early days of the Obama presidency.

“As a matter of reality, in the first 100 days, [the Republican Party] has not done anything to improve its political position with regards to the fact that it has been a shrinking entity,” he said.

Last week, the former McCain aide told a group of gay Republicans it was critical for the party to seriously weigh support for same-sex marriage.

McCain was not the candidate that we needed. He won the nomination by appealing to Hispanics and moderates; however, none of these supported him in the election. McCain believed that he could win by condemning social and small government conservatives. The problem with McCain is that he allowed his vanity, which was stroked by the libs, to think that he could win by being nice to the liberals and moderates. He fell for the oldest trick in the book.

Every nation must die. If the Republican Party can’t be a true conservative party, we might as well let the Democrats finish us off quickly. At the rate they are going, the end could come before Republicans have another chance to stop them, especially if clowns like this don’t learn to shut up. With saboteurs running around trying to divide Republicans, and make it easy for Democrats and the pop media, we are going to have to work twice as hard in 2010.

Proof that the GOP is too right wing. It’s not tolerant enough to accept Lieberman as a VP candidate. It has to move to the left to survive. /s barf

McCain didn’t fall for anything. He believes in working hand-in-hand with libs with all his heart.

Were you saying the same thing in 1976 in the wake of Nixon and Watergate and when the GOP had less numbers than they do now.

Because of people like you Senator. No principles. No understanding of business. In fact, little understanding of anything. Except how to tell fables and get re-elected. You are dangerous to the American way of life.

This “stuff” coming out of the mouths of McCain’s staff (and daughter) removes any doubt where the trashing of Palin started.

I honestly don’t know if it is still out there or not. I tend to doubt it. You have to get so many votes to keep the danged thing alive, and I don’t think there was a national figure this last time around. It may still be viable in places, but I think it’s done.

There’s nothing wrong with the Republican Party, that the complete absence of the name “McCain” couldn’t fix.

Just shut up McCain.

Both of you. You did this.

"A shrinking entity"? Thank you, Captain Picard. Any advice on what to do about the Obamacratic borg?

Are you sure he was the campaign manager, and not McCain's double?

Actually in 1976 I was making the transition from liberal Democratto conservative Republican. I detested Nixon. I literally could not stand the sight of the man.

Interestingly Nixon’s disgrace led to Democrats taking control of things. Just like now their incompetence, hypocricy and just plain totalitarian tendencies resulted in their being thrown out and Republicans taking over again.

I am willing to concede that things seem much worse now than then. Under George Bush the line between the parties blurred. Bush was Democrat lite and if this fanatic in the Oval Office has his way America might become a thing of the past before Republicans return to power.

Actually I am not sure that want to see the Republicans back on top. These days I am thinking about what the difference is between them. The whole thing has turned into a gigantic shell game. I am thinking that all of these politicians are enemies of the American people.

Nixon was more liberal than Bush on domestic issues. Nixon was in favor of universal health care, created the EPA, and instituted wage and price controls.

“I just wanted to take a second to come by and pay my respect and the campaign’s respect to your organization and to your group,” said Schmidt, who many view as the new architect of the Republican Party. “Your organization is an important one in the fabric of our party.”

In his brief remarks, Schmidt weaved in a personal anecdote about his lesbian sister and her relationship to him, his wife, and his children. “On a personal level, my sister and her partner are an important part of my life and our children’s life,” he said. “I admire your group and your organization and I encourage you to keep fighting for what you believe in because the day is going to come.”

- Steve Schmidt, addressing the Log cabin Republicans at the Republican National Convention, 4 Sep 08

“When Lehman Brothers collapsed in the fall I knew pretty much right away that … from an electoral strategy perspective, the campaign was finished.”

It was doomed when Senator McCain suspended his campaign, flew back to DC, and voted for this stupid bailout, the "only" solution to this financial crisis. That killed him with the fiscal conservatives.

Last week, the former McCain aide told a group of gay Republicans it was critical for the party to seriously weigh support for same-sex marriage.

Look, I'm more liberal than most here on this issue, but I can not support that at all. Leave this issue to the state legislatures and keep DOMA. 10th Amendment.

Well, I don’t think any significant number of conservatives ended up NOT voting for McCain over Obama - certainly not enough to sway the election.

However, McCain’s performance during the credit crisis frittered away an opportunity for him to offer a “choice, not an echo” to Obama’s economic policies. What we got was a big kumbaya moment and a massive bailout.

Who knows what would have happened with the election if McCain took principled opposition to TARP. It may not have changed the outcome, but it certainly would have crystallized the difference between the two candidates and the two parties on economic philosophy.
