BMI's Gainor Tells House Subcommittee Liberal Bias Has Hurt Newspapers
NewsBusters ^ | April 23, 2009 | Matthew Philbin

On April 21, the Business and Media Institute's Dan Gainor testified before the House Judiciary Committee's Courts and Competition Policy in a hearing on "A New Age for Newspapers."

As MRC's Tim Graham wrote on April 22, the hearing was spurred by the steady drumbeat of newspaper closings around the country, and calls from some Democrat lawmakers to bail out and subsidize the newspaper business.

While others testified on newsprint business models and the impact of the Internet, Gainor's statement to the subcommittee highlighted liberal bias as a major factor in the industry's decline. "The concept of a journalist as a neutral party has become a punch line for a joke, not a guideline for an industry," he said.

Gainor pointed to the scant newspaper coverage of last week's tea party protests as an example of editorial bias. He also cited a number of surveys and polls: "'By a margin of 70%-9%, Americans say most journalists want to see Obama, not John McCain, win,' Pew reported. Other surveys confirmed it: According to Rasmussen, 'Over half of U.S. voters (51%) think reporters are trying to hurt Sarah Palin.'"

He specifically called out the New York Times. "The number who believe 'almost nothing' in the newspaper is nearly identical to those who do believe," he told the subcommittee. "And while newspaper credibility has taken a hit among both Democrats and Republicans, it is lowest among Republicans with the Times having just a 10 percent credibility rating in that group. One person in 10? You could write graffiti on a wall and have more people believe you."

And yet, I have to admit that the NY Slimes is more credible than at least several dozen members of Congress.

How’s that for scary??

Media Schadenfreude and Media Shenanigans PING

"The concept of a journalist as a neutral party has become a punch line for a joke, not a guideline for an industry," he said.

"FAKE BUT ACCURATE" as an excuse (used by Dan Rather) and Jason Blair Syndrome and the jihadists working to engage in fauxtography for Al Reuters have undercut their credibility.

Beyond telling us "truths conservatives don't want to hear" they've gone to manufacturing outright propaganda that insults our intelligence.

The newspapers are WRONG to blame the internet on their falling circulation numbers. Television news is also having dropping numbers and far fewer people are turning to the internet to view streaming news reports.

LOL! That’s gotta sting! Graffiti is 9 times more trustworthy than the New York Times.

“And the people bowed and prayed
To the news God they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, the words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sounds of silence.”

Like the Unions, they would rather go bankrupt than change their destructive behavior.

Talk about “speaking (conservative) truth to (liberal) power”. I’ve always hated that cliche, BTW, but in this case it rings so true.

BMI's Gainor Tells House Subcommittee Liberal Bias Has Hurt Newspapers
Before the 2004 election Evan Thomas of Newsweek said the MSM would give Kerry an extra 15% from its lib bias reporting. And we know that in '08 the bias was even more overt for The Kenyan. (Tweety's leg is still tingling)

So being conservative, take 15% away from the Pretender-In-Chief and McCain wins in a landslide. Barry would only have won Hawaii, Vermont and DC - for 10 EC Votes. McCain would have had 528 EC Votes.

And now Kerry -- who served in Vietnam -- wants the gubmint (aka us) to FUND the newspapers! So like the Banks and Auto Companies, the gubmint will have control. And like the CEO of GM, Barry could fire any Editor he didn't like. This would end the 'Free Press' and it'd be nothing but a Pravda ver 3.0

Something has to be done to stop this Madness. The Dems are out of control!

Any other profession...medicine, engineering..law..that deliberately set out to commit malpractice would find itself in similar straights. Basically congress and the Feds are being told that the ability to sell their cr%* is coming to a screeching halt...
