Hackers stole data on Pentagon's newest fighter jet

The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter's self-diagnostic system was compromised by hackers, officials say.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Thousands of confidential files on the U.S. military's most technologically advanced fighter aircraft have been compromised by unknown computer hackers over the past two years, according to senior defense officials.

The Internet intruders were able to gain access to data related to the design and electronics systems of the Joint Strike Fighter through computers of Pentagon contractors in charge of designing and building the aircraft, according to the officials, who did not want to be identified because of the sensitivity of the issue.

In addition to files relating to the aircraft, hackers gained entry into the Air Force's air traffic control systems, according to the officials. Once they got in, the Internet hackers were able to see such information as the locations of U.S. military aircraft in flight...

I see and hear a lot of conferences and navel-gazing from government types and contractors about information security - best practices etc. but they never seem to get round to implementing their grand ideas.

So while our economy continues to tank, Obama does everything he can to erode our national security, create further hate and discontent between our citizens, while he travels the world emboldening our enemies making a fool of himself.... all the while top secret defense files are stolen from under his eyes and on his watch.

I once worked for a company that had a very cool looking group of network administrators. Very hip. When they were together in a room, you could easily mistake them for models there for an ad shoot.

The manager was smooth and polished. His "go to" assistant was an attractive business looking woman.

I already knew the manager was an empty suit but that's another story.

One day, I was in the assistants cubicle as she was "finishing up" the install of some security software for HP-UX's. While standing in her cube, I couldn't help but notice a number of errors and warnings scroll by. When she proclaimed she was finished and turned to me, I asked about the errors and warnings I saw scroll by on her screen. Her explanation was something to the effect of "Well, you get them but the software installed".

They already could. If I recall, the F-35 was vulnerable at certain parts to the Chinese and Russian radar systems because of wavelength.

The F-22 Raptor runs around $120 Million each. The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter runs $35 Millon each.

The F-22 Raptor, designed for the United States Air Force, is a twin-engine fighter intended primarily for air-to-air combat but also capable of attacking ground targets. It will be the stealthiest aircraft ever; thanks to new low-radar-observable designs and materials, engineers were able to lose the all-black, oddly shaped configurations of the F-117 Stealth Fighter and B-2 Bomber in favor of a more conventional design.

The Raptor, which should enter service in 2005, also features supercruise, the ability to sustain supersonic flight without the use of fuel-gulping afterburners.
