FORT WORTH Jack Spirko owns a media company, is married to a nurse and has a son in college. He has two dogs and lives in a nice house with a pool in a diversified neighborhood in suburban Arlington, Texas.
Spirko, 36, considers himself an average guy with a normal life.
But for the past few years, Spirko has been stockpiling food, water, gas, guns and ammunition. He also has a load of red wine, Starbucks coffee and deodorant stashed away.
I refer to myself as a modern survivalist, which means I dont do without, Spirko explained. I have a nice TV; I have nice furniture. We are not living in the sticks, but I take all of these things very seriously.
Spirko, an Army veteran and self-described stark-raving-mad Libertarian, is part of a growing movement of people who are preparing for a disaster natural, economic or man-made. Referred to as modern survivalists or preppers, they are taking steps to protect and provide for their families should something bad happen.
Theirs is a different breed of survivalist, far from the right-wing militants or religious extremists who hole up in bunkers, live off the land and wait for the apocalypse.
Preppers are regular people with regular jobs who decided after Sept. 11, after Hurricane Katrina or when their 401(k)s tanked that they cant rely on someone else to help them if something goes awry.

Any outdoors store carried those filters. We use them in Scouts
Post #37 is just listing basic steps to take...steps that take very little time...very little effort...very little money...and will not impact “normal” life.
Going into more depth is futile. Most people will do nothing their entire lives, always claiming that they are “too busy” (a grand irony...people aren’t too busy, just lazy and scared of deviating from their routines).
Which is to say, most people won’t even do the simple things. At most, they may buy a handgun, but really, they are doing that for crime or ego reasons or because it’s cool ... more than for a viable survival plan that they are following.

Thanks Pappy. I’ll keep an eye out. Order them from Berkey and it’s $100 for 2.
I'm not creating a gasoline stock pile. Plenty of stuff that can do the same job at antique stores that most people overlook that can do the same job. Hand crank radio's that pick up short wave, hand crank or inertia flashlights, backpack with frame, canteens or camel backs, P38 can openers, shovels, rakes and hoes, wheel barrow with bicycle pump.
In addition to firearms and ammo., cross bow or re curve or compound, sling shot, pump BB or pellet gun, gut hook, fillet and assorted knives along with meat tenderizing mallets.
Several bottles of hydrogenperoxide, isopropal alchol, a huge supply of aspirin and dental floss, bandages, wraps and cotton.
A don't tread on me flag is a must. Just a few things to add.
Right on. Handtools plus screws, nails and various fastners can help build a shelter out of nothing but trees in the woods. Forgot to mention a bicycle for transportatin, rope, twine cable and string for various needs. I have access to horses but most don't. Keep in mind traveling long distances without a car. Boots, clothing and provisions.
Just a thought, but if the poop hits the fan, I'm staying away from roads and sub-divisions for obvious reasons. A good local map is a must. Also, as some food for thought, when poop strikes, grocery store will turn into a cage match with folks beating, stabbing and doing whatever they have to, to get provisions. Best to be prepared so as to aviod these areas.
Just my opinion, but if I lived in a subdivision, I would have a plan to get to a safe place. Maybe stash some stuff in that safe place.
This is tinfoil hat stuff for most people. Not everyone has been in a position where they have to live off the land or prepare for survival with no resources. The way things are going, I think it's time to start preparing for life without a government that promises a fix for your every need. My wife says that I should have been born 200 years ago. Maybe so. But if things keep going the way they are, I feel I can deal with life as it was back in the 19th century.
