Sunspots could be seen by the Soho telescope in 2001 (l), but not this year (r)
There are no sunspots, very few solar flares - and our nearest star is the quietest it has been for a very long time.
The observations are baffling astronomers, who are due to study new pictures of the Sun, taken from space, at the UK National Astronomy Meeting.
The Sun normally undergoes an 11-year cycle of activity. At its peak, it has a tumultuous boiling atmosphere that spits out flares and planet-sized chunks of super-hot gas. This is followed by a calmer period.
Last year, it was expected that it would have been hotting up after a quiet spell. But instead it hit a 50-year year low in solar wind pressure, a 55-year low in radio emissions, and a 100-year low in sunspot activity...

From the smallest particle to the largest galactic formation, a web of electrical circuitry connects and unifies all of nature, organizing galaxies, energizing stars, giving birth to planets and, on our own world, controlling weather and animating biological organisms. There are no isolated islands in an electric universe.

The sun is a threat our security.
Beowulf Schaeffer will pilot the Long Shot toward the galactic core where he'll discover a chain reaction of supernovae, but that won't be until 2645.
Thank you.
No formal education, learned all on my own. We even built our own observatory to house the instrument.
Hard to believe how far away some of these things are. 25,000 light years works out to about 25,000 x 5.9 trillion miles (one light year = 5.9 trillion miles). If you could plant yourself within that cluster instantaneously and then look back at Earth, you would actually see the Earth as it appeared during the last ice age. That is, if there was a telescope so powerful. I know, a lot of 'ifs' there.
You bet.
After I processed the shot, we thought about how it would be living on a planet orbiting one of those stars on the outer edge of that cluster.
Can you imagine the view at night? WOW!
Thanks for the link!! I'll check it out.
Didn’t you see that GW movie, where the Earth got very cold as a result of GW? See, they’ve thought of everything. Any outcome is a cause of GW.
“With all due respect.... have they figured out some faster-than-light way to know about the imminent arrival of these gamma rays?”
Dunno. The program said the gamma ray explosion could have occurred 100 years ago and arrive at any time.
Isn’t it ironic the history channel has so many programs about how history could end.
Excellent information that makes sense.
“SUN SPOTS HAVE DISAPPEARED”
That’s nothing, my wife has this cream she puts on every night and it can make any sunspot or wrinkle disappear. She’s been doing it for years.
It's scheduled for Sunday, so batten down the hatches. The world is coming to an end, woman and children afflicted worst.
But FR has magic JuJu so we can still post and freep, then repopulate the earth;-)
Or not. Any such event would arrive without warning. The History Channel is simply speculating about what could take place.
I love M13. It’s one of my favorite Messier objects.

Sooooooooooooooo.... how many angels can dance on the head of a pin, anyway? Should we all have bugged out with Marshall Hepplewhite?
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Shades of Southpark -- sounds like your wife has solved the ginger problem. :>)
Women and minorities will be hardest hit.
Thanks for the ping. Invest in companies that make parkas and mukluks and furry-wooly underwear.
They say in this article that we have not witnessed global cooling which is not entirely true. The problem with how surface temperature readings have been collected and analyzed leaves open a huge possibility for error and misinterpretation.
Here is a great site that all who are interested should check out:
This guy wasn't a "pizza scientist" was he?
