WASHINGTON As an eager rookie in the House of Representatives, Tom McClintock came to Capitol Hill in January, ready to honor a popular president who had transformed the nation's politics.
Yes, Ronald Reagan's 98th birthday was approaching. And McClintock, the new Republican congressman from California's 4th District, offered a resolution to celebrate the Gipper's life.
It was never taken up by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. "We were informed by the committee that they don't do birthday resolutions any more," McClintock said.
The resolution was one of two pieces of legislation sponsored by McClintock in his first 100 days in office. The other would have created a "Free Enterprise Education Week" to educate students about free enterprise and it didn't pass.
As a conservative freshman in a more liberal Washington, McClintock is among the nation's most powerless politicians.
But he is happy that his megaphone has grown louder since his days as a state senator in Sacramento.
McClintock is using his higher profile to warn that Washington is quickly headed the way of California.

. . . . .
McClintock said South Carolina Republican Gov. Mark Sanford's decision not to accept part of the federal stimulus money was "the very responsible thing to do." And he criticized California Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger for not doing the same.
"I think it's utterly irresponsible for governors like our own in a state that he's already taken to the brink of bankruptcy by overspending,
" McClintock said.
McClintock/Sanford ping!
I suppose there’s no way we could dump Arnold and get Tom to take over.
They just don’t do birthday resolutions for white, Conservative males.
I have read that Cal is getting another 4B for educational stimulus. What is going to happen when that runs out and will we be bailing out Cal for more irresponsible decisions? Why should my tax dollars go to a state that is fiscally irresponsible?
When the House voted for a budget that called for more borrowing and higher deficits, he told a story of how Americans deserve the freedom to keep more of what they earn.
I would like to read that story.
They just dont do birthday resolutions for white, Conservative males.
That is funny considering that Reagan was the one to make Martin Luther King birthday a federal holiday.
PING!

I like Tom McClintock.
Any conservative that pushes back against the liberal socialist agenda of Obama-Pelosi-Reid, is a conservative with his head on straight and not afraid to proudly display his cojones in public.
BTTT
McClintock is excellent. On other speeches I’ve read from him, he is one of a handful of big politicians who actually understands what a common person goes through in daily life. We need more like him. At least CA gave the nation one good thing in sending McClintock to D.C.
