Obama Fried Chicken' Under Fire
Posted 1 week ago, 0 replies
A well established Brooklyn restaurant has changed its name to "Obama Fried Chicken," offending many and even catching the attention of New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg. The mayor encouraged the owners to find a "more appropriate" name for the eatery.
Along the blocks of Brooklyn's Brownsville neighborhood, hundreds of storefront restaurants compete for the commerce of the city's pedestrians. When the restaurant Royal Fried Chicken on Rutland Road switched its name to Obama Fried Chicken last week, the local reaction was immediate. According to the Associated Press, manager Mohammed Jabbar said the name was not meant to offend anyone but to pay homage to the president in the predominantly black part of town.
Jabbar, 33, a university instructor and lawyer in his native country of Bangledesh explained the owner's decision to rename the restaurant insisting he meant no harm and is a firm supporter of Obama, reports the New York Times. He thought is was a good idea because the people in the neighborhood "love" him and thought it would evoke a sense of pride. "From this love, everything is happening," Jabbar said, exhausted from all the hype.
Obama Fried Chicken is the latest in a string of businesses in the neighborhood that have used the president's likeness in the name of political and commercial enthusiasm. A Brooklyn brewery branded a beer called Hop Obama and just blocks away Obama Beauty Supply opened its doors several months ago. The beauty store owner, Mohammed Seraji, said his children's excitement about the president's political ascension and popularity was the motivation behind the name. A hot item in the store, a $49.99 wig called the "Michelle Obama".
Community activist Kevin McCall said Obama Fried Chicken is "highly offensive to African Americans" and has pressured the owner to remove the marquee by Friday. In the meantime, McCall has organized a protest in the event the sign is still hanging on April 11.
"Community leaders came. They told us we have to change the name," said Jabbar. "They said if you don't change it they will take action."
"Fried chicken, watermelon and minstrels are part of the racist stereotyping of black people in America. It's outrageous. You have to be sensitive and knowledgeable," said City Councilman Charles Barron. Barron has joined the efforts to change the restaurant title and believes the owner is exploiting the president's name.
Chantel Harewood, 18, a college student and Brooklyn native, ordered food from the restaurant and said she was impartial to the the new name. "Why not? It's history," she said. "All these stereotypes. People got to relax." In response to the negative attention she said, "That's so blah, predictable, typical."
Jabbar initially complied with community activist and agreed to change the name to Popular Fried Chicken but now says Obama Fried Chicken will remain the same. He is already concerned about what will happen should the activists return. "I'm new to this country," he said. "I don't really know what they could do."
White House officials said the administration objects to the use of the president's name, image and likeness for commercial purposes.

Bambi can “object” to use of his (ugh) name all he wants.
My question is: can he STOP it? Is there a LAW against using his name, image, or likeness in a commercial product?

If I were the owner, I'd go to court, have my last name changed to "Obama" and tell the Mayor to go screw himself, and take his community minded thugs with him.
Typically poor job of journalism, did the name change enhance traffic to his business? Might be interesting to see how upset the community is if it increased his business.
